Take ⁢a moment to ‍reflect, everyone. As we approach the end of 2025, it’s clear ⁣we’ve ‌been on quite the journey. It feels like just yesterday we were overwhelmed by the annual NAMM ⁤gear showcase, yet so much has transpired as then. Now is the ⁢perfect time to pause and explore ⁢what made this year⁢ truly remarkable for guitar ⁣enthusiasts.

Without a doubt, 2025 has ⁢been a phenomenal year for ⁤the guitar. We witnessed historic performances, a once-in-a-lifetime reunion, the⁣ rise of new guitar prodigies, a complete tonal transformation, and some ⁣groundbreaking gear releases.⁤ We won’t⁤ give everything away just yet, but‍ trust⁣ us, it’s been a ⁢year to remember.

Despite the somber moments we faced-losing several legendary ⁤figures in the music‌ world-2025 has left us wiht an inspiring legacy that will ⁤resonate ‍for years to come.

So, settle in, ‍grab ⁢your favorite drink, ⁣and join us as we delve into ‌the‍ 25 reasons that ⁣made 2025 a standout year ⁤for guitars, curated by the GW team. Let’s kick things off with…

1.Ozzy Osbourne Left a Legacy with a Global Farewell Concert

BLACK SABBATH – Back To ⁤The Beginning 2025 Full Show (time ‌stamps) – YouTube

In July, Ozzy ⁢Osbourne took center stage at the “Back to the Beginning”⁤ concert, a monumental ⁣farewell event featuring an ⁣incredible lineup including Metallica, ‍Pantera, ⁢Halestorm, ‌Slayer, Alice in Chains,‍ Jake E. Lee, and Nuno⁤ Bettencourt, among others. ⁤Just two and‌ a ‍half weeks later, he passed away.

As noted ⁢by my⁤ colleague,⁣ EIC Michael ⁣Astley-Brown, this concert was not just Ozzy’s farewell; it was⁢ also a heartfelt tribute to Tony Iommi’s unparalleled influence on guitar⁢ music, a sentiment‍ I wholeheartedly share.

While ⁢I may not be a die-hard Sabbath fan, ‍hearing Ozzy proclaim, “we ‍are Black Sabbath!” as the thunderous opening⁢ chords ⁤of war Pigs ‌ filled the air was unexpectedly moving ⁣for me.

In that moment, ⁣I ⁢was ⁢transported back to my childhood, jamming in my best⁤ friend’s basement, where he would play Paranoid ‍ on his Epiphone SG, and I would take on the ‍role ⁤of Ozzy, learning the riffs from⁤ him. “back to ⁤the Beginning,” indeed. – JM

2. Guitar⁣ Solos are Back in Pop Music -⁢ Just ask Olivia Rodrigo

“Step aside, Taylor Swift: Olivia Rodrigo is this generation’s Eddie Van Halen – her Glastonbury performance proved it.”

Of all ‌the headlines I anticipated‌ writing this year, this one was unexpected. Yet, it perfectly encapsulates the undeniable guitar allure of Rodrigo’s set at one of the globe’s ⁣largest ⁣music festivals. With⁢ session guitarist Arianna Powell shredding on a Jackson Soloist and Rodrigo herself ⁤rocking a Mustang while⁤ duetting with Robert Smith of The ⁤Cure,‌ this was far from a typical‌ pop performance; it was‍ a genuine⁤ rock spectacle.

And before anyone jumps to‌ conclusions, let me clarify that headline: Eddie Van ⁤Halen inspired ⁢countless individuals to pick up ‌the guitar ⁣in⁢ the ’80s,while Taylor Swift was credited with doing the same in the 2010s. I believe‌ Rodrigo will have a ‌similar impact on the youth of the ‌2020s. She is elevating the⁢ visibility of the electric guitar⁣ and its rich musical⁢ heritage at the highest level, and that’s something to⁣ celebrate.– MAB

3. Amp Modelers Advanced Significantly⁣ in 2025

Each year, advancements in the amp modeling sector push the boundaries further. Though, 2025 felt especially transformative. A important factor was the launch of Helix⁣ 2, also known as Helix Stadium, which redefined one of‌ the leading floorboard modelers with innovative technology. Additionally, updates ⁤from Fender, Neural DSP, and Kemper, along ‍with notable⁣ developments⁤ from budget-friendly⁤ brands, contributed to this evolution.

Yet, the most significant shift ⁢in the modeler⁣ landscape was undoubtedly instigated by ‌John ‍Mayer, who made waves⁣ by ‍collaborating with Neural⁢ DSP for⁣ a signature plugin. This marked⁣ a‍ pivotal moment for the industry, showcasing a tube amp enthusiast embracing digital modeling. If it’s⁢ good enough‍ for⁢ Mayer, it’s bound ⁣to ⁢attract a wider audience. – MO

4. Geese and Y2K ⁤Nostalgia Are Reviving the Guitar Band Dream

If you’re active⁢ on music TikTok, particularly in the #indierocktok community, you’ve likely encountered Geese. This Brooklyn-based⁣ indie-rock band‌ has soared ⁣to new heights this year, earning the title of “America’s‌ most exciting young rock band” according to GQ.

With a sound ⁢steeped in Y2K and indie sleaze nostalgia, Geese could easily ‌be mistaken for a band performing alongside The ‍Strokes at ⁢a festival from the early 2000s.

Fronted⁣ by Cameron Winter,‌ the band is captivating audiences and introducing indie rock to ⁤a fresh ‍generation, all while keeping the spirit of the guitar band alive. – JB

5.The Quest⁤ for Guitar ‍Heroes Remains Strong

In a world where the ⁣quest for ⁣authentic guitar⁣ heroes remains strong, audiences are still⁣ eager for musicians who embody the spirit of the term. The⁢ desire for⁢ genuine talent and artistry continues‍ to thrive, ensuring that the legacy of ⁢guitar music will endure.

1. The Meaning of‌ Originality in Guitar Heroes

The ⁣saga of Giacomo Turra serves as ‌a reminder that authenticity and credibility are essential traits we seek⁤ in our guitar icons. Unfortunately, not every ⁤guitarist we encounter possesses extraordinary technical skills, ⁢boundless creativity, or ⁢treats others with respect.Let’s agree to aim higher ⁤than just ⁢one out of three, especially when one presents themselves as a flamboyant ⁣figure ‍on social media.

Social media can⁣ be a powerful tool‍ for promoting new music and artists,⁤ leveling the playing field. However, it can also devolve into a chaotic space that prioritizes image over substance, highlighting the need for a reality check among musicians. – MP

2.⁣ The End of ⁣Bad ⁣Guitar‍ Tone

In ‌2025, the concept of poor guitar tone became a relic‍ of⁣ the past, largely‍ thanks ⁢to mk.gee. this innovative guitarist is ‍not only a‌ prominent Gen Z figure but also Eric⁢ clapton’s favorite new talent, having recorded his⁣ hits using a Tascam 424 preamp-much like‌ the one you might have read about‌ in vintage gear magazines.

With the resurgence of this ⁣preamp through‌ JHS Pedals and‍ Benson Amps, along with a philosophical ‌demo from John Mayer, the guitar community began reassessing its tonal standards. As I explored in my thesis, “Does ⁤’bad’ guitar⁤ tone even exist anymore?”, it’s‌ now ‍easier than ever⁤ to ⁢achieve professional-quality sound with plugins and modelers. Embracing a traditionally criticized tone could be the quickest⁢ route to standing out, and that’s ‍a refreshing outlook: every tone has its place! -⁤ MAB

“Yeah, that was Buddy Guy! He’s, like, the last of the‍ original bluesmen. He’s a legend!”

After watching Sinners,‌ a captivating horror film directed⁢ by⁣ Ryan‌ Coogler set⁣ in ‍the early 1930s Mississippi, I found myself ⁣in a bar with friends discussing the film. While it ⁤primarily revolves around‍ vampires, Sinners remains true to its roots with a score deeply ‌influenced by the haunting acoustic blues of that era, featuring a‌ cameo from christone‌ “Kingfish” Ingram alongside Buddy Guy, bridging two generations⁣ of blues.

While I ⁣can’t divulge too much ⁢about his role without spoiling the plot,⁣ it’s worth noting that⁣ Buddy Guy⁢ is not only a living‍ link to the true origins of the blues but also a surprisingly talented actor!

As the highest-grossing original film in the U.S.since 2010, Sinners has introduced‍ the blues to a broader ⁣audience.

“They ⁢had me play a little spot in a movie,” Guy shared with Guitar world ‍ earlier this year⁤ regarding Sinners,⁢ “and I still⁢ get more calls about the‍ movie than I do my records!” – JM

If you had ⁣asked the Gallagher brothers⁢ three years ago ‍if they would‌ ever share a stage again, ‍they would have laughed you⁢ out of the room.Yet,2025 will be etched in history as⁣ the year Oasis reunited.

Did this reunion shine a light on guitar music? The instrument was ⁢thriving‌ long before Oasis took‍ the stage again, but ‌Liam’s ⁤son certainly believed so. Nonetheless, the reunion was a ⁢cultural and musical event like no other.

For guitar ⁣enthusiasts,it was a treasure⁢ trove. Noel began playing solos again, unveiling a custom Les Paul designed for the‍ shows that broke the internet upon its release ⁤as a signature ‍model. Gem Archer and Bonehead also‍ introduced ⁤their own signature guitars. The biggest music event of the year-aside from “Back to the Beginning”-was ⁤centered around guitars. For fans like me, ⁣who never thought this day‌ would come,‍ it was an exhilarating⁢ experiance. – MO

5. Guitar Brands Are elevating Their⁤ Budget Guitar Offerings

As we move forward, guitar brands are increasingly focusing on enhancing their budget-friendly models, ensuring that quality is not sacrificed⁢ for‍ affordability. This shift is crucial in ⁤making quality⁣ instruments accessible to a broader⁢ audience,⁢ fostering a new ⁣generation of guitarists who⁢ can explore their musical potential without breaking the bank.

1. Budget Guitar Brands Are Raising the Bar

Purchasing a budget guitar no‍ longer means compromising on quality. ⁤This year, several remarkable instruments emerged from the lower price range, ‌and ⁤we ⁣couldn’t be more excited about it.

The PRS SE NF 53 stands out as one of ‍the most impressive releases of the year, astonishing‌ our review ⁢team, who⁣ hailed it as “a straightforward tool for musicians: any ⁤guitarist could benefit from it, making it possibly⁣ the most essential⁢ guitar of 2025.”

Other notable mentions include the Cort G200SE, Spira T-450,⁤ Sterling By Music Man’s Intro ⁢Series Cutlass, and Jet⁤ Guitars’‍ JT-350 BKM H and JJ-300 P90 SFG, all ⁣of which have ‌made ‌waves in 2025. -⁤ JB

Indeed, the notion that hardcore music has been gaining mainstream ⁢traction for the past five years is accurate, but 2025 marks a ⁤significant peak.

Leading ‌the ⁤charge is Turnstile, who made a triumphant return with their⁢ album Never Enough, which has been a ⁣personal ⁢favorite of ⁣mine alongside Broncho’s Natural Pleasure. The album received rave reviews, enjoyed unprecedented exposure on late-night television, garnered five Grammy nominations, and attracted massive crowds worldwide. They even partnered with fender ‌to promote⁢ their ⁣new American Professional Classic⁢ line.

In one of their music videos, you can spot a vocalist⁤ on a jet ski, a drummer in a desert, and ‌Pat McCory delivering a whammy-laden guitar‍ solo⁣ in a stunning alpine setting.⁣ The hardcore label has become somewhat irrelevant; Turnstile is⁤ on track‌ to become one of the biggest⁣ rock bands globally.

While Turnstile has certainly broken the mold, they are not ⁢alone. Cody Chavez of Drain is infusing thrash ⁤riffs and ⁤shredding solos into their ⁢latest album,‍ …Is Your Friend. Hardcore music ⁣has undeniably evolved, moving beyond its roots where the biggest bragging rights were about the type ‌of van you drove. – MP

Their ⁣sophomore album ⁤is a triumph, featuring the ⁤catchiest guitar riffs of the ‌year and sharp indie-pop songwriting that strikes⁤ a perfect balance between Pavement and PJ Harvey-something ‍I ⁣never knew I needed.

They are also challenging genre conventions: Rhian Teasdale ⁢and Hester Chambers have been showcasing B.C. Rich and kramer guitars on stage, with one⁢ being used‌ for shoegaze ‌whammy dives. Myles Kennedy and Steve Stevens have both cited this as their most-listened-to album of the year, and I⁣ can certainly relate. – MAB

As⁣ 2025 began, there were concerns that TikTok might be banned in the U.S., but after a tug-of-war between outgoing President Joe Biden and incoming President Donald Trump, the app survived and has grown even more influential.

Last year, it propelled⁤ The Darkness’s‌ classic I ⁤Believe⁤ In A Thing ⁢Called Love back to the top ‍of the U.S. Rock charts, and this year, it resurrected a three-decade-old Radiohead ballad that nearly caused the band to split, improbably landing it back on the‌ Billboard Hot 100.

Additionally, it introduced my favorite ‍guitar riff of the year-the gritty, nylon-string melody ⁢that drives Hudson Freeman’s⁣ If You Know Me-to the attention of John Mayer. The debate over whether TikTok is⁢ a⁢ positive or negative force continues, ⁢but its undeniable ability to spotlight‌ songs, riffs, and‍ artists is clear. ‌ – JM

Who⁣ says the concept of the “guitar hero” is dead -⁤ or⁢ a long-forgotten relic of the past? Like any other notion, it has simply transformed and adapted to the 2020s and the digital age.

Yungblud instantly springs to mind: the Ozzy Osbourne⁣ protégé and Aerosmith collaborator has proven he is a formidable force in the music scene, ⁣blending rock ‌with contemporary influences and captivating audiences‍ worldwide.

In the realm of modern rock, few embody the ⁢essence of a ⁤21st-century rockstar quite like him. His performance‍ in Back to the Beginning marked a pivotal “passing of the torch” moment, yet he is far from alone in this journey.

Emerging talents such as Thomas Raggi, Grace Bowers, Diamond Rowe, Yvette Young,⁤ Tim Henson, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Sophie ‍Lloyd, Yoyoyoshie,⁣ Mateus Asato, and Geese’s Emily Green are redefining⁣ the concept ‍of the “guitar hero.” They‍ are demonstrating that while the genre may ‍evolve, rock ‘n’ roll is undeniably alive and thriving.⁢ – JB

While the guitar industry ⁤has often been‌ perceived as cutthroat, recent events have shown a shift towards unity‍ in the face of⁤ challenges over the past year.

The ⁤NAMM organization has actively engaged with Washington ‍regarding the effects of tariffs, while ‍pedal manufacturers, particularly those ‍in⁤ the boutique sector, ‍have been vocal about ‍their struggles. Companies across the board are recognizing the importance of ⁣collective action to raise ⁣awareness about the financial implications ‍of changing import regulations.

Moreover, guitar manufacturers ‍are adopting a more inclusive approach to⁣ signature ⁢models,‌ as‌ seen with Cory Wong’s‌ signature Strat and StingRay. This‌ shift indicates a ‌growing understanding that having the right artist associated with some of their products is more beneficial than forcing exclusive commitments ⁢that could‍ lead to a lack of ⁢portrayal.

While we may not see Gibson and Fender sharing ⁤a ‌drink anytime soon, the idea that a legendary guitarist might openly acknowledge⁣ their⁢ affinity for both a ⁤Strat and a Les Paul is becoming increasingly acceptable within⁣ the ⁣industry. – MP
