Celebrating 30 Years: Teh New Chapter of The Beatles Anthology
This fall marks a meaningful milestone as The Beatles Anthology celebrates its 30th anniversary, showcasing contributions from both seasoned and fresh perspectives.
A Journey through Time
Originally released in 1995, this groundbreaking docuseries was expanded to eight episodes for home video, stemming from Neil Aspinall’s ambitious project titled The Long and Winding Road, which was postponed due to tensions following the band’s split.this series provided the first opportunity for the Beatles-featuring John Lennon in archival footage-to narrate their own story, complemented by the release of two new singles: “Free As a Bird” and “Real Love,” both crafted from Lennon’s demo recordings.
New Additions for the Anniversary
To commemorate this anniversary, a ninth episode has been introduced, directed by Oliver Murray. Additionally, the companion albums have expanded with a fourth volume, curated by Giles Martin, the son of the legendary Beatles producer George Martin. this new volume features remixed versions of the singles and includes “Now and Then,” which is touted as the “final” Beatles single released in 2023.

Giles Martin shared insights about the creative process, stating, “People often assume there’s a meticulous planning system behind our work, but in reality, it’s quite spontaneous. We operate with a certain level of risk, but I’ve grown accustomed to it.” His extensive experience with the Beatles catalog began with The Beatles: Rock Band in 2009 and has included remastering classic albums like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts club Band and Abbey Road, as well as contributing to Peter Jackson’s acclaimed documentary, The Beatles: Get Back.
Staying True to the Beatles’ Essence
Martin emphasizes his commitment to preserving the authenticity of the Beatles’ music.”My role is to represent the music as faithfully as possible. I never wanted to alter what the Beatles created; their essence must remain intact,” he explained. this philosophy grants him the freedom to explore new avenues while respecting the band’s legacy.
The Long-Awaited “Now and Then”
one of the standout moments for martin was working on “Now and Then,” a Lennon demo that was initially considered for the original Anthology but was set aside due to the extensive work required. In the new Episode 9, viewers can witness McCartney, Harrison, and Starr beginning to collaborate on it, with McCartney expressing their apprehension about the amount of work needed.
Thanks to innovative technology developed by Peter Jackson’s team, the Beatles were able to isolate Lennon’s vocals and piano, allowing them to construct a new song using recordings from Harrison and fresh contributions from McCartney and Starr.
Episode 9: A Time Capsule of the ’90s
For director oliver Murray, Episode 9 represents a “full circle moment.” Initially brought on to create a promotional film for “Now and Then,” he was later invited to direct this new episode, which serves as a reflective epilogue to the series. “It needed to provide a new layer of introspection while stepping outside the established timeline,” he noted.
Murray describes the nearly hour-long episode as a “’90s time capsule,” featuring intimate moments of the surviving Beatles together, including a rare gathering at Abbey Road Studios. He also uncovered vintage interviews and clips, such as McCartney performing an acoustic version of “Helter Skelter” and Harrison crafting his guitar part for “Real Love.”
Reflecting on the Legacy
Murray chose not to include new interviews with McCartney and Starr, believing it would disrupt the temporal flow of the material. He highlights how the project allowed the surviving members to reconnect emotionally, despite their limited time spent together. “They seamlessly fell back into their dynamic, discussing the profound impact of being a beatle,” he remarked.
“The bittersweet nature of embarking on Anthology without John is palpable. George’s reflections on using this project as a form of therapy are particularly poignant, as they navigate the absence of their bandmate,” he added.
A New Era for The beatles
“This isn’t an ending; it’s a transition,” Murray concluded. “The Beatles’ music serves as a cultural bridge between generations, evolving as it is passed down.” With new projects emerging each fall, there are still treasures in the vault waiting to be explored. Though, Martin clarified that no further “new” songs will be released, despite Jackson’s earlier hints. “What makes ‘Now and Then’ truly Beatles is the presence of George. Any attempt to create something new would lack the authenticity of the original band,” he stated.
The expanded the Beatles Anthology Collection is set to launch on November 21. Episodes 1-3 will stream on Disney+ starting November 26, followed by Episodes 4-6 on November 27, and concluding with Episodes 7-9 on November 28.
