“I’ve been particularly impressed by Tim Lefebvre’s ‍innovative work ⁢on⁢ David Bowie’s Blackstar.‌ Many players in the​ fusion genre ⁤are pushing boundaries ⁢with effects, even if that⁤ style can be challenging for⁤ me to digest. I admire Timmy’s pedal work with Rage Against the Machine, especially his heavy‌ distortion on Bulls on Parade ⁢and his wah effects,” Alderete remarked.

Dream Pedals and Recent Finds

“I’ve ⁤always wanted the​ rackmount version of the Micro Synth, but only ten were made, making it incredibly rare.Recently, I acquired a ’60s Vox Ampliphonic Stereo ⁤Multi-Voice synth that I had been hunting for ages. Kid Koala, who had been raving about it, found one in a Seattle music ‌shop, and I ‌bought it​ over ‍the phone,” he shared excitedly.

Testing New pedals

“To familiarize myself with a new⁤ pedal, I run multiple basses ⁣through it to gauge its response. I might also incorporate guitars, keyboards, and drum machines to see ‌how it interacts. I explore all its settings and determine‍ how it pairs⁣ with my existing pedals, ensuring ‍I can maximize its potential,” Alderete explained.

In 2010,‍ while in‍ New York with The Mars​ Volta, he met drummer⁣ Mark Guiliana, and they instantly clicked. “We decided​ to work together without even hearing each other play,” ⁤Alderete​ said.

In ⁣2012, they recorded six ideas⁢ in just six hours, with suGar and Alderete later writing the remaining material. “They returned to L.A. to finalize ⁢the tracks,” he added.

“You can run two rigs: one‍ clean and one with effects, ‌allowing you to maintain both ⁢sounds simultaneously. I did this with Halo Orbit, using effects on both ‍channels. There are ways to integrate pedals into your sound while preserving the thickness you desire,” he advised.

“Depending ⁣on your musical style, start with a quality distortion, fuzz,‌ or overdrive pedal. Next, invest in ⁣a compressor.
