Take a moment to reflect, everyone. As we approach the end of 2025, it’s clear we’ve been on quite the journey. It feels like just yesterday we were overwhelmed by the annual NAMM gear showcase, yet so much has transpired as then. Now is the perfect time to pause and explore what made this year truly remarkable for guitar enthusiasts.
Without a doubt, 2025 has been a phenomenal year for the guitar. We witnessed historic performances, a once-in-a-lifetime reunion, the rise of new guitar prodigies, a complete tonal transformation, and some groundbreaking gear releases. We won’t give everything away just yet, but trust us, it’s been a year to remember.
Despite the somber moments we faced-losing several legendary figures in the music world-2025 has left us wiht an inspiring legacy that will resonate for years to come.

In July, Ozzy Osbourne took center stage at the “Back to the Beginning” concert, a monumental farewell event featuring an incredible lineup including Metallica, Pantera, Halestorm, Slayer, Alice in Chains, Jake E. Lee, and Nuno Bettencourt, among others. Just two and a half weeks later, he passed away.
As noted by my colleague, EIC Michael Astley-Brown, this concert was not just Ozzy’s farewell; it was also a heartfelt tribute to Tony Iommi’s unparalleled influence on guitar music, a sentiment I wholeheartedly share.
While I may not be a die-hard Sabbath fan, hearing Ozzy proclaim, “we are Black Sabbath!” as the thunderous opening chords of war Pigs filled the air was unexpectedly moving for me.
In that moment, I was transported back to my childhood, jamming in my best friend’s basement, where he would play Paranoid on his Epiphone SG, and I would take on the role of Ozzy, learning the riffs from him. “back to the Beginning,” indeed. – JM

Of all the headlines I anticipated writing this year, this one was unexpected. Yet, it perfectly encapsulates the undeniable guitar allure of Rodrigo’s set at one of the globe’s largest music festivals. With session guitarist Arianna Powell shredding on a Jackson Soloist and Rodrigo herself rocking a Mustang while duetting with Robert Smith of The Cure, this was far from a typical pop performance; it was a genuine rock spectacle.
And before anyone jumps to conclusions,let me clarify that headline: Eddie Van Halen inspired countless individuals to pick up the guitar in the ’80s,while Taylor Swift was credited with doing the same in the 2010s. I believe Rodrigo will have a similar impact on the youth of the 2020s. She is elevating the visibility of the electric guitar and its rich musical heritage at the highest level, and that’s something to celebrate.– MAB

Each year, advancements in the amp modeling sector push the boundaries further. Though, 2025 felt especially transformative. A important factor was the launch of Helix 2, also known as Helix Stadium, which redefined one of the leading floorboard modelers with innovative technology. Additionally, updates from Fender, Neural DSP, and Kemper, along with notable developments from budget-friendly brands, contributed to this evolution.
Yet, the most significant shift in the modeler landscape was undoubtedly instigated by John Mayer, who made waves by collaborating with Neural DSP for a signature plugin. This marked a pivotal moment for the industry, showcasing a tube amp enthusiast embracing digital modeling. If it’s good enough for Mayer, it’s bound to attract a wider audience. – MO

If you’re active on music TikTok, particularly in the #indierocktok community, you’ve likely encountered Geese. This Brooklyn-based indie-rock band has soared to new heights this year, earning the title of “America’s most exciting young rock band” according to GQ.
With a sound steeped in Y2K and indie sleaze nostalgia, Geese could easily be mistaken for a band performing alongside The Strokes at a festival from the early 2000s.

Unfortunately, not every guitarist we encounter possesses extraordinary technical skills, boundless creativity, or treats others with respect.Let’s agree to aim higher than just one out of three, especially when one presents themselves as a flamboyant figure on social media.
Social media can be a powerful tool for promoting new music and artists, leveling the playing field. However, it can also devolve into a chaotic space that prioritizes image over substance, highlighting the need for a reality check among musicians. – MP
2. The End of Bad Guitar Tone
In 2025, the concept of poor guitar tone became a relic of the past, largely thanks to mk.gee. this innovative guitarist is not only a prominent Gen Z figure but also Eric clapton’s favorite new talent, having recorded his hits using a Tascam 424 preamp-much like the one you might have read about in vintage gear magazines.
With the resurgence of this preamp through JHS Pedals and Benson Amps, along with a philosophical demo from John Mayer, the guitar community began reassessing its tonal standards. As I explored in my thesis, “Does ’bad’ guitar tone even exist anymore?”, it’s now easier than ever to achieve professional-quality sound with plugins and modelers. Embracing a traditionally criticized tone could be the quickest route to standing out, and that’s a refreshing outlook: every tone has its place! - MAB

After watching Sinners, a captivating horror film directed by Ryan Coogler set in the early 1930s Mississippi, I found myself in a bar with friends discussing the film. While it primarily revolves around vampires, Sinners remains true to its roots with a score deeply influenced by the haunting acoustic blues of that era, featuring a cameo from christone “Kingfish” Ingram alongside Buddy Guy, bridging two generations of blues.
While I can’t divulge too much about his role without spoiling the plot, it’s worth noting that Buddy Guy is not only a living link to the true origins of the blues but also a surprisingly talented actor!
As the highest-grossing original film in the U.S.since 2010, Sinners has introduced the blues to a broader audience.
“They had me play a little spot in a movie,” Guy shared with Guitar world earlier this year regarding Sinners, “and I still get more calls about the movie than I do my records!” – JM

For guitar enthusiasts,it was a treasure trove. Noel began playing solos again, unveiling a custom Les Paul designed for the shows that broke the internet upon its release as a signature model. Gem Archer and Bonehead also introduced their own signature guitars. Indeed,the notion that hardcore music has been gaining mainstream traction for the past five years is accurate,but 2025 marks a significant peak.
Leading the charge is Turnstile,who made a triumphant return with their album Never Enough,which has been a personal favorite of mine alongside Broncho’s Natural Pleasure. The album received rave reviews,enjoyed unprecedented exposure on late-night television,garnered five Grammy nominations,and attracted massive crowds worldwide. They even partnered with fender to promote their new American Professional Classic line.
In one of their music videos, you can spot a vocalist on a jet ski, a drummer in a desert, and Pat McCory delivering a whammy-laden guitar solo in a stunning alpine setting. The hardcore label has become somewhat irrelevant; Turnstile is on track to become one of the biggest rock bands globally.
While Turnstile has certainly broken the mold, they are not alone. Cody Chavez of Drain is infusing thrash riffs and shredding solos into their latest album, …Is Your Friend. Hardcore music has undeniably evolved, moving beyond its roots where the biggest bragging rights were about the type of van you drove. – MP
Moisturizer confirmed that the tongue-in-cheek Brit-rockers Wet Leg are among the most thrilling new talents in rock. Their sophomore album is a triumph, featuring the catchiest guitar riffs of the year and sharp indie-pop songwriting that strikes a perfect balance between Pavement and PJ Harvey-something I never knew I needed.
They are also challenging genre conventions: Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers have been showcasing B.C. Rich and kramer guitars on stage, with one being used for shoegaze whammy dives. Myles Kennedy and Steve Stevens have both cited this as their most-listened-to album of the year, and I can certainly relate. – MAB

Last year, it propelled The Darkness’s classic I Believe In A Thing Called Love back to the top of the U.S. Rock charts, and this year, it resurrected a three-decade-old Radiohead ballad that nearly caused the band to split, improbably landing it back on the Billboard Hot 100.
Additionally, it introduced my favorite guitar riff of the year-the gritty, nylon-string melody that drives Hudson Freeman’s If You Know Me-to the attention of John Mayer.
