DarWin: The Supergroup Redefining Progressive Rock with a Touch of Mystery
While many supergroups frequently enough succumb to the pitfalls of ego, DarWin emerged in 2015 with a refreshing vision: to assemble top-tier musicians across various disciplines, unleash thier creativity on ambitious, narrative-rich compositions, and watch the magic unfold.
The Talented Ensemble Behind DarWin
At the helm of the drums and production is the legendary Simon Phillips, a titan in the session musician world. Taking on vocal duties is Matt Bissonette, known for his collaborations with icons like Ringo Starr and Elton John, stepping away from his usual role as a bassist.
The Enigmatic Songwriter
In a time when rock ‘n’ roll mystique seems to be fading, the identity of the project’s songwriter, the elusive DarWin, remains largely unknown. While he prefers to communicate through email regarding the new studio album, Distorted Mirror, seasoned guitar maestro Greg Howe and the talented bassist Mohini Dey are more than willing to share their experiences.
How the Journey Began
greg howe: My journey with DarWin started in 2018 while I was in Los Angeles working with Simon Phillips on a project called Protocol. Simon mentioned that there was someone interested in having me contribute to his music. I visited Simon’s studio and was introduced to DarWin’s unique sound.
We recorded remotely, sending quick mp3s back and forth for feedback. I was promptly struck by the originality of the music. As for DarWin, he remains quite the enigma; I can’t divulge much more about him.
Mohini Dey’s Viewpoint
mohini Dey: I joined the project in 2022, drawn by its blend of pop and jazz elements. In today’s music landscape, the classic pop-rock essence frequently enough gets overshadowed by pure technicality. With DarWin, we aim to revive that nostalgic vibe.
Our music invites listeners to groove and sing along, making it more relatable than overly complex compositions. The focus is on the stories DarWin wants to convey-tales about the habitat, humanity, and life itself.
Studio dynamics: A Unique Experience
Mohini: I recall Simon setting up his expansive drum kit, as he prefers to record bass and drums together for a more authentic sound. This approach allows for live takes, which is a rarity these days. I thrive in that environment, where I can quickly adapt and capture a part in the moment.
Simon had laid down some stunning basslines,allowing me the freedom to suggest changes and improvise,especially on tracks like Man Vs Machine. We often joke that I can get Simon to consider my ideas more readily!

Crafting Music with a Dystopian Edge
Greg: Writing parts that align with DarWin’s dystopian themes is an intriguing challenge.I’ve been experimenting with the DigiTech Whammy DT, which adds a synthetic, futuristic quality to my playing. Though, there’s also an underlying sadness when contemplating the future, and I strive to incorporate that into my sound.
what kind of tone are you aiming for?
Greg: If you plug a standard electric guitar into a basic high-gain amplifier with all settings at noon, the sound is typically unappealing. it requires fine-tuning to achieve something special. I seek warmth and smoothness in my tone, akin to a beautiful voice. If a sound is too shining or harsh, I question its suitability, just as one would with a violin.
Mohini: Simon prefers a clean bass tone, avoiding distortion and excessive slap bass or ghost notes.

Greg Howe’s Rig for Distorted Mirror
Greg: Simon has a strong preference for traditional amplifiers, reflecting his old-school roots. For this project, I relied on my beloved Cornford MK50, which is my go-to amp since it requires no additional pedals. I also utilized a marshall JCM 2000 DSL, typically paired with a Tube Screamer for added flavor.
It’s solid-state, and just to hear that come out of my mouth feels sacrilegious, but it sounds great, very tube-like.

I also have a signature amp with DV Mark called the Little GH 250. Although it’s solid-state, it delivers a sound that rivals tube amps, which I find impressive.
My favorite wah pedal is the original Cry Baby. I asked Dunlop if they had a true bypass version, and they suggested the Buddy Guy wah as the closest option. Additionally, I have a signature overdrive pedal, the Greg Howe Lick box, which I genuinely take pride in. in the past, I’ve been disappointed with products bearing my name, but this one truly stands out.
For my guitar, I’ve been using my Kiesel Lyra signature model, equipped with a Seymour Duncan Whole Lotta Humbucker in the bridge. This pickup was initially a temporary choice, but it has remained due to its thick sound, which differs from the snappier tones of my other guitars. The frets are made from a harder metal than nickel, ensuring durability without the issues that come with stainless steel.

Mohini Dey’s Essential Gear
Mohini: I primarily use my Mayones Comodous Classic 5 bass. It’s my prized possession, and its attack, tightness, and tonal capabilities resonate deeply with me. For the track Be That Man from my last album, Five Steps On The Sun, I had to tune my B string down to A, which is a rare feat without buzzing. This bass can handle such challenges effortlessly.
My go-to amplifier is the Markbass Standard 104HF cabinet paired with the Little Mark 800 head. The combination of this tube head with the Aguilar OBP-3 preamp in my bass provides unbelievable depth, clarity, and definition. I keep my Mid High control on the head and the bass EQ fully boosted to achieve a bridge-heavy tone, ensuring that my fast notes remain clear and distinct.

Mohini: You can truly hear Greg’s influence on this album. He has the freedom to unleash his creativity in his solos, and the energy and stories he conveys are palpable.
Greg: Mohini is extraordinary. She executes techniques on the bass that I’ve never encountered before. Her skills are impressive, and she possesses a fantastic rhythmic sense, allowing her to get funky with ease.
I was aware of her technical prowess, especially with complex time signatures, but I was pleasantly surprised by her ability to groove with my funkier compositions. She completely nails it.

Mohini’s Musical Journey and Its Impact on DarWin
Mohini: I didn’t actively choose to play bass; it was simply given to me at the age of three. My father, a touring musician, recognized my potential and wanted to nurture it.
Early on, I was playing with Bollywood artists, and I feel like certain doors opened when I got the AR rahman gig or played for MTV India.

While many parents might overlook their children’s interests, mine invested heavily in my musical education, which sometimes led to rebellion on my part. In the U.S., I find that parents are more relaxed, but my upbringing in India was quite strict. Music was treated like a formal education, which is why I excelled-I had no other option.
Throughout my life, I’ve experienced notable breakthroughs. I’ve been a professional musician since I was nine, and now at 29, I’ve had the privilege of working with Bollywood artists. Opportunities like the AR Rahman gig and performances for MTV India were pivotal moments for me.
Though, moving to America two years ago and landing the gig with Willow Smith marked a turning point in my career. Shortly after, I signed with a management agency for my own music and tours, and now I’m performing at various European jazz festivals.

Reflecting on a Multifaceted Career
Greg: Looking back at my earlier work, especially the late-’80s releases on Shrapnel Records, I sometimes wish I could revisit those tracks. However, there are moments from my mid-20s that I appreciate, thinking, “Not too shabby!”
Touring with Michael jackson was an unforgettable experience. Everything felt larger than life-from luxurious hotels adorned with gold fixtures to a private jet exclusively for the band. Performing the solo for Beat It live was exhilarating.Walking out with Michael, who was so energetic and engaging, was both thrilling and intimidating. You could feel him urging you to give it your all, while I was focused on hitting the right notes. I vividly recall one night when he spun me around mid-solo, and I wondered how that must have sounded through the massive speakers.
The Future of Guitar Music
Greg: I firmly believe there’s still plenty of life left in guitar-driven music. It’s curious that discussions about the future of music frequently enough center around the guitar, unlike instruments like the saxophone or piano. The guitar’s versatility allows for endless exploration, and I continually encounter new techniques, tunings, and gear. We are far from reaching the limits of what can be achieved.
The Possibility of a darwin Tour
Mohini: Organizing a tour is challenging since each member has their own commitments and artistic pursuits. However, Simon often gets approached after shows with inquiries about a DarWin tour, and I experience the same on my own tours.Every time I hear our songs, I feel they deserve to be performed live. I believe it’s only a matter of time before we hit the road together.

DarWin: Simon and I aimed to create cohesive and compelling songs that contribute to a thematic album experience. We felt that the essence of art was becoming diluted, and we still had fresh ideas to explore.
We recognized that rock music can sometimes feel repetitive, yet there are countless ideas and emotions waiting to be uncovered. Our goal was to embrace traditional production techniques in a studio setting, guided by Simon, and to relish the creative process.

His guitar skills are so impressive that they could be the subject of scientific study. It’s clear that he shoudl handle our solos, while I focus on the rhythm parts that form the foundation of our songs.

Crafting the Guitar Atmosphere
DarWin: We aimed for a rich atmosphere with our guitar sounds. The heavy rhythm guitars are typically layered with both Kraken and Mesa/Boogie tracks to achieve a thick, full-bodied tone. For a more ethereal clean sound, we incorporated the classic Leslie speaker.
Our music encompasses a variety of styles, including ballads. The shimmering clean tones in tracks like Rising Distortion and Loophole are processed through a vintage Leslie speaker from the Cold War era.
The guitar tone must resonate with the bass to create a powerful sonic experience, reminiscent of bands like Megadeth or Metallica. Though, for the ballads, I defer to Jesse Siebenberg, who plays exquisite acoustic and lap steel guitar, allowing him to shine.
Essential Gear in the Studio
My setup includes various Kiesel Aries guitars equipped with Lithium pickups,a Victory Kraken VX MKII,and often a Mesa/Boogie 5:25 through a Marshall 4×12 or bogner cabinet-typically without any effects. The heavy rhythm guitars are doubled with both Kraken and Mesa/Boogie tracks for added thickness, while the Leslie provides a unique clean sound.It’s all about the direct connection from guitar pickups to speaker cones.
Keeping Guitar Playing Fresh
After our first double album, t7-s, I hit a creative wall with standard tunings. I began experimenting with detuning the low E string, which reignited my excitement for another four albums. Now, I usually use a 0.056 gauge string on the low E. I prefer not to play seven-string guitars, so I push the low string to its limits.
When I play in drop C, I also lower the high E to C, which contributes to the mystical sound of Rising Distortion. While much has been explored with the guitar, I believe it will continue to surprise us.The combination of technical skill, emotional depth, and enough power to energize a Tesla results in something truly spectacular.

DarWin: In today’s world, much of the mystique surrounding rock ‘n’ roll has diminished. Many young people aspire to be influencers, seeking validation through social media likes. I prefer to engage with the system only to the extent that my music can uplift listeners and provide them with joy.
