There are four footswitch modes available: Preset, Scenes, Effects, and Amp Mode.
In Preset mode, users can access four presets. Scenes allow for seamless switching between various parameters and effects, ideal for transitions within songs. Effect mode enables the activation or deactivation of individual blocks within the current preset, including the Amp block’s Boost. Lastly, Amp mode allows for switching between four amps loaded into the amp block - more details on this will follow.

Accessing these modes requires holding down two footswitches simultaneously, which can be somewhat cumbersome but is standard for compact devices. A notable drawback is that the displayed signal chain remains static nonetheless of the mode, always showing the four effects/amps loaded in the current preset.
This static display can complicate switching between presets, scenes, or amps in Amp mode, as users must memorize which scene/preset/amp corresponds to each footswitch. however, the color coding of each switch can assist in this regard.
It’s also important to note that the footswitch assignments briefly appear after pressing a footswitch, but this occurs after the selection has already been made, offering little assistance.
The AM4 distinguishes itself from other compact modelers thru its management of the limited number of blocks. Each of the four blocks can store four effects of a specific type, organized by numbering the blocks one to four and labeling the four slots within each block A through D.

this is a smart approach to managing DSP, allowing for 16 effects within a single preset.
The type of block is customizable by the user.As an example, I can designate the first block as a Drive block and then choose four different drives to fill slots A, B, C, or D.
Switching the active slot within each block can be done through Scenes mode or by pressing the footswitch assigned to each block in Effects mode. While this may sound a bit complex,it’s an ingenious method for managing DSP,enabling you to utilize 16 effects in one preset,including four high-quality amp models. Some high-end modelers struggle to achieve this without reaching their DSP limits.
It’s important to note that you can have two drive blocks if desired,but aside from that,only one of each block type is permitted per preset. For example, you cannot include two Amp blocks in a single preset.
Although switching between scenes is seamless with no audio gaps, there is a slight delay between pressing the footswitch and the scene changing. While not a dealbreaker, it is indeed noticeable.

The Amp Mode further enhances this multi-slot block functionality. in this mode, each footswitch corresponds to one of the four slots in the Amp block, providing quick and seamless access to four amps within a single preset. Attempting this on other compact modelers may lead to DSP limitations, which is why Fractal emphasizes this feature with a dedicated mode. If you primarily use the AM4 for amp duties in a pedalboard setup, this capability is invaluable.
Additionally,the AM4 includes an effects loop positioned after all four blocks,which cannot be relocated.You might wonder why it’s included if it’s at the end of the signal chain. Wouldn’t it make more sense to place post-amp effects after the AM4 entirely?
The rationale is that this setup allows you to run external effects after the AM4’s signal chain while still utilizing the balanced TRS outputs, negating the need for a DI box. This feature is convenient and makes the AM4 an excellent companion for pedalboards,almost perfect.

During my testing, I encountered this exact issue.
One issue I encountered is that I prefer balanced XLR outputs on a modeler over balanced TRS for live performances. This preference isn’t due to any significant audio difference between the two (both typically output balanced, low-impedance signals), but rather because XLRs are more commonly found. Most sound engineers will have an XLR input ready, and if you need to run a long cable, XLRs are easier to extend by connecting two together.
While testing the AM4, I faced this exact situation. Positioned at the far end of the stage from the sound desk, I was asked to connect to an XLR loom, which meant I needed a DI box or a 1/4″ to XLR converter. I had a Radial Stagebug DI box on hand, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that the AM4 was just a minor inconvenience away from being the ultimate compact pedalboard modeler.

The standout feature is undoubtedly Fractal’s Cygnus – X3 modeling technology. this is the same modeling used in the Axe Fx III, which Fractal claims is industry-leading, and my experience supports this assertion.
Some models may require a bit of adjustment.
The models respond exceptionally well to my picking dynamics and the volume control on my Fender Telecaster, creating a genuine connection to the sound. The Cygnus modeling produces a polished tone reminiscent of a well-produced studio guitar track. Though, there is a significant amount of high-end data in each tone, so some models may require adjustments.
As an example, with both the Double Verb Silverface (Fender Twin Reverb) and Slow 100 Lead (Soldano SLO 100) models I use for my live presets, I found myself applying substantial high-cuts of around 6.6kHz and 9.5kHz,along with reducing some treble in the EQ settings of both models.
Once the high-end is tamed, the result is a beautifully scooped Fender clean from the Silverface and an incredibly enjoyable, saturated gain from the Slow 100.

what stands out for me is the clarity maintained even within saturated sounds. The Peavey 6160 Lead model is another example of a high-gain amp that delivers those tones while preserving clarity.With the Peavey, I find myself reducing the bass on the amp’s EQ to keep it tight.
If you have some experience with modeling gear, you will quickly discover fantastic amp tones.
The Vox AC30-based Class A 30W Hot model, reminiscent of Brian May’s sound, is also incredibly rewarding. Playing through some Queen riffs with that tight, mid-forward tone is endlessly enjoyable, but I find myself again using a high cut and being cautious with the treble on the amp. However, this is typical for a real AC30 as well.
There is a vast array of options available, with 247 amp models (some being different channels of the same amp) covering everything from bright Fender cleans to aggressive Dumble tones and powerful Marshalls.
So yes, some tweaking is necesary, but it’s not a lengthy process. if you have a bit of experience with modeling gear, you will quickly land on some fantastic amp tones.
For those looking to dive deeper, the expert edit options within the AM4 Edit app allow for extensive parameter editing at the component level, catering to even the most meticulous tone seekers.

Part of the tweaking process involves the Dynacab Cabinet emulation, which is also the same as that found in the Axe-Fx III. I would appreciate a few more mic options, as we currently have only four: Dynamic 1, Dynamic 2, Condenser, and Ribbon. The Dynamic mics provide some high-end bite, while the Condenser and Ribbon mics offer a more rounded sound.
As I’m cautious with the high-end, I find the Ribbon and Condenser mics more beneficial and often offset the mics from the center of the speaker using the visual interface. There is also an option for a Room send, but I’m not a fan of this as it tends to create a nasally mid-range sound.
The amp models are not the only strong point here. Exploring the 77 available drive models, I tested one of the AM4’s Tube Screamer models – the T808 OD – against my own 40th Anniversary TS808.
The T808 performs admirably, delivering that delightful, compressed tube Screamer feel that I frequently enough find lacking in other modelers. Tonally, it’s quite accurate as well. It’s slightly brighter than my own Screamer, but well within the expected variations due to tolerances in analog components.

The AM4 effectively emulates a real Tube Screamer TS808 and an actual amp.
It’s worth mentioning that the AM4 successfully emulated the real TS808 alongside an actual amp. While testing the unit,I used the real Tube Screamer in front of both the Fender Twin and SLO 100 models. This combination resulted in a compressed mid-humped drive with the Twin and a satisfying boost to the front end of the SLO, leading to rich saturation.In essence, the AM4 allowed the pedal to perform as Tube Screamers are intended to.
Digital emulations of fuzz pedals are another area where modelers often fall short, but the AM4 excels here as well. The face Fuzz, as an example, provides a solid emulation although it doesn’t clean up as effectively as the real pedal.
We also have extraordinary models of high-gain pedals, such as the Fat Rat (Pro Co Rat) and Suhr Riot, with the former delivering a gnarly, full-range distortion and the latter perfect for a tight shredding tone.
The AM4 also features a complete selection of delays, with 27 options ranging from the straightforward Analogue Mono to the more experimental reverse delay. My favorite is the Graphite Copy (MXR carbon Copy), which is fitting since the real version is my go-to delay pedal. It convincingly replicates the analog delay sound, with repeats that darken over time, blending well into the mix while adding texture. However, I do miss a modulation switch.
The other delay options span from the crystal-clear Digital Mono to the quirky Reverse delay. While there’s a wide range available, I feel that the more unconventional sounds aren’t as well executed on the AM4 compared to other modelers. As a notable example, achieving a clear reverse sound with the Reverse Delay proved challenging.

If you are particular about your reverb sound, the AM4 will meet your expectations.
The AM4 offers a wide array of reverb effects, including the classics like Spring, Hall, Plate, and Room, along with some unique SFX options. Each type features an extensive range of variations; for instance,there are 10 distinct Spring and 10 different Room Reverbs available.
Moreover, the AM4 provides numerous parameters for those who enjoy fine-tuning their sound. Take the Small Spring reverb, such as, which includes controls for Time, Pre Delay, Tone, Mix, Drip, Low Cut, High Cut, Level, Ducking, Number of Springs, Dwell, and Input Gain. This level of customization ensures that even the most discerning users will find satisfaction with their reverb settings.
After testing various options, my favorite remains the Small Spring, known for its classic drip effect.It envelops the guitar sound beautifully without overpowering the dry signal. This quality was consistent across all the reverbs I tried, even with more experimental effects like the SFX Pleiadas, which offers a futuristic shimmer.
No multi-effects unit would be complete without modulation options, and the AM4 excels in this area, featuring blocks for Chorus, Flanger, Filter, Phaser, Rotary, and Tremolo.

Among the standout effects are the Auto Wah and Envelope Filter. Both allow users to set the start and end frequencies of the sweep, as well as the sensitivity for the Envelope Filter, resulting in a wah sound that can be finely controlled without losing too much high-end clarity.
Additionally,the Rotary block offers extensive tweaking options. Although it contains only one rotary effect, it features controls for Rate, Low Depth, High Depth, Hi Level, Drive, Mic Spacing, Mix, and Level. As someone who frequently enough needs to replicate organ sounds on guitar during gigs, the clarity and control over tone provided by this block make it an invaluable tool.
the AM4 presents an impressive selection of modulation effects. My only critique is that many of the chorus effects tend to be somewhat darker, especially models like the Analog Stereo.
Moreover, the AM4 includes user-friendly EQ options, along with Modern, Classic, and Stereoizer Enhancers that allow for subtle EQ adjustments and width enhancements to your signal. These features contribute to a polished, studio-ready guitar sound.

The trade-off is that it may not be the most intuitive to use.The menus can be text-heavy, and the four effects per block along with the Scene system can be somewhat confusing compared to the more straightforward Snapshots of the HX Stomp or the Scenes of the Quad Cortex Mini.
Though, if you invest the time to familiarize yourself with the system, you will be rewarded with outstanding tones.
