Sheryl Crow and Her Timeless Telecaster: A Musical Journey
as Fender commemorates the 75th anniversary of the iconic Telecaster, renowned musician Sheryl Crow reflects on her enduring relationship with this legendary guitar. She describes it as her steadfast “sidekick” throughout her illustrious career, which has taken her across countless stages and miles.
“Two years after graduating from college, I picked up a Telecaster and instantly felt like, ‘This is the sound I’ve been searching for,’” Crow shared in an interview with Fender.
“It resonates with all the music I adore-think of the thick, raw tones from legends like Steve Cropper and James Burton,” she added, reminiscing about the influences that shaped her sound.
The Telecaster: A Catalyst for Creativity
For Crow, the Telecaster has been more than just an instrument; it has been a catalyst for her creativity. “The Telecaster elevates my sound beyond my own abilities. I know that sounds a bit self-deprecating, but I recognize my strengths,” she explained.
“While I can play the piano well, it’s not where my songwriting passion lies. I crave the energy of rock music. Many of my greatest hits have emerged from a powerful guitar riff paired with a compelling narrative,” she elaborated.
“The Telecaster has consistently provided that foundation for me. I’ve experimented with various guitars,but I always return to the Tele because it aligns with my personality and the emotions I want to convey in my music,” she concluded.
A Special Collaboration with Fender
In 2012, Fender collaborated with Crow to create a Limited edition Sheryl Crow 1959 Custom Telecaster, with only 60 units produced. One of these unique guitars was signed by Crow and donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, honoring her journey as a breast cancer survivor and raising awareness during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
This guitar holds important sentimental value for Crow. In 1994, just before her inaugural solo tour, she faced a devastating setback when most of her band’s gear, including her beloved Custom Telecaster, was stolen.
However, fate intervened shortly after when a fan approached her at a performance in Austin, Texas, offering a 1959 Fender Custom Telecaster that belonged to their late mother, who had also battled breast cancer. Crow has cherished this guitar ever since.
“I feel a deep connection to this instrument,” she recalled in 2012. “It’s a guitar I’ve adored for years. It feels right in my hands and has been played with love by many.”
Beyond the Telecaster: Crow’s Musical Versatility
In addition to her guitar skills, Crow is also an accomplished bass player, emphasizing the importance of the four-string in her songwriting process.
