Renowned guitarist Joel Hoekstra of Whitesnake expresses his regret over the time it took him to embrace the iconic Les Paul guitar, revealing that it was another Gibson legend who ultimately inspired his transition from the ’80s Superstrat guitars.

“it took me a long time to get hear,” he confides in an interview with Guitar World. “I started out as a Floyd Rose enthusiast,working on a Kramer guitar,and later acquired a Jackson from my friend Brett Garsed,who plays with John Farnham. I was deeply entrenched in that scene, while also trying to secure gigs and hone my rythm guitar skills.”
Hoekstra’s playing style is heavily influenced by the shredding techniques of the 1980s, notably his adeptness at two-handed tapping.He notes that the “raw rock essence” emerged later in his career,as he sought to blend his technical skills with a more aggressive rock approach.

“When I moved to New York City to participate in the Broadway show Love, Janis, which features music from Joplin’s early band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, I thought, ‘I need to get a Gibson SG, as that’s what they used,’” he recalls.
“I played the SG for a while,but eventually decided it was time to take the plunge and invest in my first Les Paul,which turned out to be the Goldtop I still use today.”
