Liv Thompson: The Unsung Hero Behind PopS Biggest Acts
While Liv Thompson might not yet be a familiar name to everyone in the bass guitar community, she has become a sought-after touring musician for pop sensations like Little Mix, Zara Larsson, Cat Burns, and Raye. Her talent has made her an integral part of the live music scene.
“sometimes it feels surreal,” Thompson reflects. “From performing at Tiny Desk Concerts and the iconic Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury to SNL and the grammys - I still dream of playing at Red Rocks,so I’m hoping for that opportunity!”
For many aspiring musicians, stepping into the competitive world of session work can seem daunting, often accompanied by uncertainties regarding job stability and financial security. However, for Thompson, the journey has been rewarding beyond her expectations.
From Small Town Dreams to Global Stages
Originating from a quaint town in East Yorkshire, England, Thompson entered music college with a singular goal: to play bass in any capacity.”I had no idea what to expect, but the chance to perform at the Grammys is beyond anything I ever envisioned,” she shares.
Her debut on television was unforgettable, performing with Little Mix on Strictly Come Dancing, the UK’s version of Dancing with the Stars.”But playing at the Grammys with Raye was an experiance like no other,” she adds.
“Raye is an extraordinary musician and songwriter, making every performance a joy. Her music spans genres from jazz and funk to rave and ballads, always keeping us on our toes.”
Innovative Bass Lines in a Digital Age
The bass work on Raye’s latest album, This Music May Contain Hope, showcases Thompson’s creativity and skill, offering a refreshing choice to the prevalent use of programmed basslines and samples in contemporary music.
Thompson played a meaningful role in crafting the album’s low-end sound, contributing to tracks like Fields, Goodbye Henry, and Happier Times Ahead.
Her success stems from a keen understanding of what it takes to make a performance work, coupled with a commitment to simplicity. “I’ve attended workshops with renowned bassists like Michael League and Sharay Reed, receiving invaluable advice. Though, it’s crucial to discern whose guidance to follow. The most impactful lesson I’ve learned is the importance of consistency in playing,” she explains.
The Foundation of Music: Bass
“The bass serves as the backbone of music; thus, power, intention, and consistency are essential. as a young artist, you’ll encounter a plethora of advice, but what resonates with one person may not suit you. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach in this industry,” she emphasizes.
If you’ve had the chance to see Raye live, you would have noticed thompson commanding the stage with an impressive collection of bass guitars, including her Fender Precision, a Duesenberg Starbass, and a F Bass BN5.
“I purchased the F Bass during my second year at music college, saving up from my gigs until I could afford it. I’m fortunate to have an excellent guitar tech on tour with Raye who manages most of my instruments, but I always keep my F bass close. It’s my go-to, alongside a Fender Precision ’57 Reissue. I also bring a Moog Sub37 synth bass on tour,” she shares.
“For Raye’s music, my Fender P-Bass really cuts through the mix. I’ve collaborated closely with the front-of-house engineer to test various basses, but the P-Bass consistently delivers. Plus, I’m lucky to be positioned prominently on stage, which took some adjustment as a bass player!”

pedalboard Essentials for Touring
My pedalboard is customized based on the specific needs of each performance, but I strive to keep it streamlined while on tour. Currently, my setup includes a Noble DI, a Boss GT-1000 Core for multi-effects, along with a boss OC-5 and a Billy Sheehan Drive.
Utilizing a high-quality multi-effects unit has proven to be the most efficient approach, particularly for session work.It allows for rapid sound creation while minimizing the clutter of numerous patch cables.
Landing the First big Break
During a summer break from my second year at music college, I found myself with some free time. Out of the blue, I received a direct message on Instagram inviting me to join Little Mix for a gig. Just two weeks later, I was in rehearsals!
It was on this gig that I met Donovan Hepburn, the drummer and musical director, who took a chance on me and provided my first taste of a high-profile session experience.

Reflecting on Performances
I make it a point to re-watch every live performance. Listening to my sets is crucial for my growth, so after any televised or live broadcast show, I always review the footage-not just for enjoyment, but to identify areas for improvement.
Confronting stage Fright
stage fright is a common experience for many musicians. Over time, I’ve learned to manage it better, but it’s something that requires ongoing effort. While some performances can be intimidating, the nerves usually dissipate as soon as I start playing.
Mindset: Live vs. Rehearsal
During rehearsals,my focus is primarily on the sound dynamics, often collaborating closely with the drummer to synchronize our parts. In contrast, when performing live, the arrangements are set, and my emphasis shifts to delivering an engaging performance and projecting the sound effectively.

Pre-Show Rituals
Before each performance, I dedicate a few hours to prepare, listening to music and warming up to ensure I’m not rushed. This readiness is vital for me to get into the right mindset and feel relaxed before taking the stage.
Favorite Tracks to Perform Live
While touring with Barny Fletcher, I particularly enjoyed playing his track Christ Flow, which features an incredibly fun bassline. Another highlight was performing Woman Like Me by Little Mix.
With Cat burns, my favorite bassline comes from her song Free, which is both gorgeous and expressive. as for Raye, I’d have to say my top picks are Beware the South London Lover Boy and The Thrill Is Gone.

Influences and inspirations
One bassline I wish I had composed is from Never Too Much by Luther vandross. the fact that Marcus Miller created that iconic line at just 19 years old is mind-blowing! During my audition for the Royal Northern College of Music, I performed Phantom of the Opera by Iron Maiden, which is also a remarkable piece.
Education and Networking
I spent four years at the Royal Northern College of Music, a pivotal period for networking, honing my skills, and performing locally. By the time I graduated, I felt well-prepared to tackle the music industry. While music college doesn’t guarantee success, it provides the opportunity to explore various paths.
Favorite Bassists
My all-time favorite bassist is Pino Palladino, who has significantly influenced bass playing styles. His work on tracks like Voodoo and his fretless performances resonate deeply with me.
I also admire Kevin Baird from Two Door Cinema Club, whose music inspired me to pursue a career in music during my teenage years when I was heavily into indie rock.

Impressive Basslines to Showcase Skills
If I wont to impress someone with my bass playing, it really depends on the audience! There are certain tracks I need to master for potential performances, so I would choose pieces like YYZ by Rush, Dean Town or skymall by Vulfpeck, What Is Hip? by Tower of Power, or Teen Town by Jaco Pastorius.
Advice for Aspiring Bassists
My key piece of advice for fellow bass players is to immerse yourself in the work of other bassists. Try to replicate what you hear, whether that means transcribing bass lines or achieving a specific tone from a recording. This skill is crucial for yoru development.
Additionally, invest in a versatile rig that can adapt to various tonal needs, and remain open to learning and adjusting to different musical situations. Building a presence on social media is also vital, as opportunities can arise unexpectedly.
