Crafting Chaos: The Journey Behind Lamb of God’s ‘Into Oblivion’
Lamb of God has never been a band to simply go through the motions. Each track they create undergoes a meticulous process of examination, refinement, and redefinition before it reaches the final recording stage. This commitment to quality has historically led the band to confront not only external pressures but also internal conflicts, all while striving to capture the raw chaos that defines their sound.
Now, after 32 years in the music industry-including a five-year period as Burn the Priest-the band has earned the luxury of time. With all members embracing sobriety, their camaraderie has never been stronger.
Embracing the Apocalypse
Despite their positive transformations, Lamb of God remains committed to crafting music that resonates with the intensity of an impending apocalypse. They approach each new project with the same fervor, ready to swing for the fences. if their initial attempts don’t hit the mark, they’re not afraid to reassess and try again.
“Many of our standout tracks have emerged from the process of merging two incomplete ideas,” Adler shares, reflecting on his creative process from a parking lot near his Virginia home. “We often blend two demos and build something entirely new. By the end, the result is often unrecognizable from the originals, yet it surpasses both.”
Finding Direction in Legacy
As they embarked on their tenth studio album,Into Oblivion, the band faced the challenge of evolving their sound while being recognized as a legacy act within the New American Metal genre. Their breakthrough came during a performance on the 2023 Headbangers Boat cruise, where they played their 2004 album, Ashes of the Wake, in full. This nostalgic journey reignited their creative spark and opened new avenues for their latest work.

“We had been performing many of those songs for years, but we had never played some of them live,” Morton explains, seated at his kitchen table with a view of his expansive, wooded backyard.”Revisiting those tracks made me reflect on my mindset back then and what I was trying to convey two decades ago, which influenced our new record.”
A Rediscovery of Sound
The follow-up to their 2022 release, Omens, Into Oblivion is not a complete reinvention but rather a rediscovery of the band’s earlier adventurous spirit. It captures the essence of a time when their inexperience fueled their creative chaos.
“When we recorded our second album,As the Palaces Burn, and then ashes,we didn’t confine ourselves to any specific structure,” Adler recalls. “We simply took riffs we loved and connected them without worrying about conventional formats. This time, we aimed to recapture that sense of freedom, focusing on what sounded exciting, regardless of traditional verse-chorus patterns.”

Into Oblivion stands out not only for its structural integrity but also for its musical diversity, marking lamb of God’s most varied release in over a decade. The album features the progressive, intricate riffs of The Killing Floor, the rapid-fire intensity of Parasocial Christ, the relentless energy of St. Catherine’s Wheel, and the haunting melodies of El Vacio. Each track is a testament to the band’s evolution, carefully crafted to ensure a balance of styles.
Respecting the Past While Moving Forward
“At this stage, it’s challenging to contribute to our discography without considering our previous work,” Morton reflects. ”With each new addition, we remain mindful of our past and strive to meet the standards we’ve set. This album accomplishes that.”
In separate interviews, Morton and Adler delve into the creative processes that shaped Into Oblivion, the thrill of heavy metal, the benefits of home recording, and their acceptance of being a legacy band.
Life Beyond the Stage
It seems you’re not exactly in oblivion right now, living in spacious homes in rural Virginia.
Willie adler: Three years ago, my wife and I purchased 10 acres in a secluded area and built our home. We wanted a space to cultivate a garden, raise animals, and create trails for our ATV.
How remote is your location?
Adler: I’m deep in the woods with no cell service. I have to drive 15 to 20 minutes just to make a phone call.
Are you parked on the side of the road for this interview?
Adler: I’m in my Jeep Rubicon, parked outside a sandwich shop that my wife and I own. After this chat,I’ll head inside to work. Her parents opened the shop in 1981, and she took it over about 15 years ago. We serve every sandwich imaginable and are notably known for our limeade.

Finding Balance in Chaos
Why does a successful band like Lamb of god choose to work in a sandwich shop?
Willie Adler: I genuinely enjoy working there with my wife. while it may not keep me grounded, it certainly keeps me busy and offers a refreshing change of pace.
And you, Mark? What’s your living situation like?
Mark Morton: We have a stunning seven-and-a-half-acre property nestled in the woods. There are coyotes around, though we rarely see them, and we’re often visited by bald eagles and various local snakes. Plus, we have chickens and dogs.
Do those chickens provide your eggs?
Morton: Absolutely! I have friends nearby who raise chickens for meat, but ours are strictly for eggs. They’re probably the happiest chickens you’ll ever meet. The worst they face is a playful chase from one of my dogs, who just enjoys scaring them a bit.

seeking solace in Nature
Does living in the woods offer an escape from modern life? Is it a peaceful retreat as we navigate through the chaos, as suggested by the album title?
Morton: The title of the album evokes more of a psychological thriller for me. It reflects the unseen burdens we carry-mental health struggles, addiction, or past traumas that haunt us. We all have our demons.
Do current events fuel your creativity and inspire you to produce intense music? Is it therapeutic to create such expressive and intricate sounds?
Adler: It’s definitely therapeutic to break through creative blocks and write riffs that excite you after a period of stagnation. However, I’m not sure it directly relates to the news cycle.
Morton: Perhaps it’s just about survival. I’ve found it necessary to tune out the constant barrage of news. When I step away from screens and look outside, I see the real world. While the news is real,I can’t let it overwhelm me.
Some might argue that I’m not living in reality, but I wonder if the opposite is true. When I disconnect from technology and take a walk in the woods, everything feels a bit more manageable.

Musical Direction and Reflection
Did you feel uncertain about the musical direction for Into Oblivion before performing Ashes of the Wake on the Headbangers Boat cruise?
Mark Morton: Before we began, I emphasized that any new Lamb of God album must be worthy of our established catalog. This raised the stakes significantly. After revisiting Ashes, I found myself reflecting on the earlier days of Palaces and the influences that shaped us.
I revisited bands that inspired me back then, such as At the Gates, In Flames, and Meshuggah, along with local Virginia acts that fueled my passion. I aimed to reconnect with the essence of why we started this band, free from the constraints of commercial expectations.
Willie Adler: Our goal was to create a sound that echoed the intensity of classic Armageddon while also feeling fresh and contemporary. We decided that a blend of our past styles would be the best approach.

Identifying the Right Path
What was the first sign that you were heading in the right direction?
Morton: The creation of Sepsis was a pivotal moment for us. It drew inspiration from a local ’90s hardcore band, Slang Laos, which had a important impact on our sound. We also incorporated elements reminiscent of the rhythmic style of Jesus Lizard. It was clear that this song represented a new direction for us.
Relearning Ashes of the Wake was daunting. I had to mentally prepare myself, reminding myself, “You wrote this for the album, so just play it.”
Willie Adler
Adler:Sepsis was one of the first tracks we tackled, and it set the tone for the entire album. I realized,”This is our record; we can explore any direction we choose.” Interestingly, it was the first song we released to gauge audience reaction, which caused some initial concern among listeners. They were unsure about it, but many others embraced it.
Sepsis features rhythmic complexities akin to those of Meshuggah, another influential swedish metal band.
Adler: I haven’t listened to Meshuggah in quite some time, but they were a major influence on us back in the day, especially with their intricate,off-kilter riffs. If you listen to our earlier albums, you can hear their influence in many of our breakdowns. The breakdown in The Killing Floor reflects that style as well.

Complexity and Creativity
There’s an abundance of fast-paced, technically intricate tracks, many of which seem to weave various riffs together before reaching a chorus-if they even do.
Adler:Parasocial Christ exemplifies this approach. The chorus appears only once, and it doesn’t come in until the latter part of the song. It was exhilarating to experiment with that structure again.
Morton: Initially, the song had a very progressive feel with complex time signatures. We had to experiment to find the right balance, ultimately simplifying it to create a more hardcore vibe.
Adler: When we first played those kinds of songs, we were all in a carefree state, enjoying ourselves without the pressure of perfection. That freedom likely helped us capture the essence of those tracks more easily.
Revisiting Ashes of the Wake was intimidating. I had to mentally prepare myself, reminding myself that I had written it for the album, so I just needed to play it. However, it required overcoming my doubts and insecurities.

Writing in Sobriety
Morton: Reflecting on my early sobriety, writing was challenging because I struggled with self-editing. I found it difficult to discern what excited me and what didn’t, as my creative process had been heavily influenced by substances.
When I removed those influences,my perception shifted. However, that was years ago, and I’ve since adapted to creating music sober. My playing style remains largely unchanged.
Do you frequently enough find yourselves in disagreements while sifting through riffs to determine what to keep or discard?
Morton: We occasionally have differing opinions. Over the years, I’ve learned that when you have multiple people in the room, including a producer, trying to please everyone can dilute the music to the point where it loses its identity.
Sometimes, someone needs to step back and say, “I’m not leading this one.” When that’s my role, I allow those who are most passionate about a particular song to take the reins.
When I stopped trying to control every aspect, I realized that the strongest opinion in the room often prevails. If I disagree with Willie on something, but he is adamant about his approach as he believes it’s superior, I defer to him, and vice versa.
Conversely, if someone is holding onto an idea that the rest of the group disagrees with, it’s essential to have that conversation and say, “You know what? The rest of the team feels differently, so maybe it’s time to reconsider.”
Adler: Mark and I share such a long history that we’ve developed a strong understanding of each other’s creative processes. We inspire one another to the point where I would feel lost entering a writing session without him.
I would feel anxious and out of place. I can experiment around Mark without fear of judgment.I can play something that sounds terrible, but I know I’ll eventually get it right. Mark has that same confidence in me, creating a comfortable dynamic between us.

adapting Techniques for New riffs
Did you modify your playing styles to accommodate some of the new riffs?
Adler: To some extent. When we recorded Palaces, I relied heavily on alternate picking and string-skipping for the technical parts, so I had to mentally revert to my 25-year-old self. As we age, there’s a natural inclination to slow down, but we made a conscious effort not to let that happen.
Morton: I haven’t altered my technique significantly in years. My focus has shifted more towards songwriting.About 15 years ago, I realized that everything should revolve around the song. If we need to play something intricate, I’ll practice until I nail it. However, it’s crucial for me to assess whether the song conveys a message. Is it a showcase of guitar skills or a meaningful composition?

Crafting Atmosphere in ‘El Vacio’
El Vacio is haunting and atmospheric, gradually escalating from a whisper to a powerful crescendo. It’s more nuanced than many of your other tracks.
Morton: I composed that piece at the suggestion of Josh [Wilbur, producer] and Randy [Blythe, vocalist]. After we had seven or eight songs, we asked ourselves, “What’s missing? what can we add for balance?” We already had Sepsis, which was abstract, along with technical, thrash, and hardcore elements.
We sought something distinct that would introduce a new character to the album. I retreated to my studio and crafted El vacio. It surprised me that a piece I created was selected for the album. I found it intriguing, and they loved it.
echoes of slayer: The Heavy metal Essence of Lamb of God’s ‘Into Oblivion’
The album features several piercing tremolo solos reminiscent of classic Slayer, along with sinister riffs akin to Slayer’s style in tracks like Bully and Blunt Force Blues.
Slayer has been a part of my life since childhood, and their influence is deeply ingrained in my musical psyche.
Willie Adler
Adler: This reflects the countless times we’ve shared the stage with them. Slayer has been a significant part of my upbringing, and their sound is etched in my mind.Though, we weren’t consciously channeling Slayer while creating this album.
Morton: Our producer, Josh, had recently collaborated with Kerry king, and he often suggested I incorporate tremolo effects into my solos. I had to remind him, “While the Kerry record is fantastic, this is a Lamb of God project.” Still, he encouraged me to experiment with tremolo on many leads, adding a unique flavour to our sound that we hadn’t explored extensively before.
Overcoming Challenges in the Studio
Did you encounter any significant challenges while crafting Into Oblivion?
Morton: I don’t have any dramatic conflict stories to share. While I acknowledge that there are many struggles in the world, my experience here has been quite peaceful.I’m surrounded by chickens and dogs, with a fresh pot of coffee brewing.
We’re enjoying ourselves, writing music with old friends, and surrounded by guitars. It’s all about having fun, so let’s dive into creating a heavy metal record!
