“We call them the KZ 57 SB PAFs, designed to replicate the winding pattern and coil structure from the very first machine Gibson utilized in the ’50s,” Stuart shares. This machine was responsible for winding most of the P-90s from that era, as well as some of the earliest Patent Applied For pickups.
“The winding machine from 1957 was manufactured by Geo-Stevens, and it was the first of its kind. Geo-Stevens continued to produce similar winders for years afterward,” he adds.”However, the original model had its quirks-it was somewhat rickety and featured a unique lobeless cam setup. This design influenced how the wire was laid back and forth on the bobbin,affecting the turns per layer and allowing for a fuller bobbin with the same number of wire turns compared to later machines.”

“They tend to have a more airy quality,” Stuart explains. “The low-end is richer in detail-not necessarily tighter, but with more transients and harmonic content compared to coils produced by the Leesona machines. they also possess a sweeter tone, resembling a humbucking P-90 more than the later Patent Applied For pickups.”
Understanding the Winding Process
Stuart notes that the output of Patent Applied For humbuckers varied between 1957 and 1962, transitioning into the ‘Patent Number’ models. He emphasizes that the initial pickups wound on the Geo-Stevens machines had a maximum output ceiling that was lower than thier successors.
“People often generalize, saying, ‘Oh, the ’59 models are hotter.’ But honestly, you can find ’59 pickups with outputs ranging from the lowest to the highest,” he states. “The early Geo-Stevens machine limited the output, as you couldn’t achieve a hot Patent Applied For from it.”
“Considering that a P-90 typically has around 10,000 turns split into approximately 5,000 turns per coil for a Patent Applied For pickup, the geo-Stevens winder wouldn’t allow for more than 8.2k output. The coils produced were fluffier and less tightly wound, contributing to their distinct character.”

“This is part of their charm-the coils are less uniform than those produced later. While you won’t find a hot Patent Applied For humbucker from this machine, you can expect outputs around the idealized 8k range,” he adds.
