A recent documentary titled Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul reveals that Gregg Allman was on the brink of death himself due to a heroin overdose on the very night his brother was killed.

At that time,the Allman Brothers Band was poised for monumental success. Their iconic live album, At Fillmore East, had solidified their status as one of America’s leading rock bands. The Fateful Evening
On October 29, everything shifted dramatically. While riding his Harley-Davidson sportster in Macon, Georgia, Duane attempted to avoid a flatbed truck that unexpectedly turned in front of him, resulting in a loss of control. Even though he survived the initial impact, the extent of his internal injuries was not immediately clear, and he succumbed later that night at just 24 years old.
As recounted by Gregg’s friend Chank Middleton in the documentary, they had been anxiously waiting at the hospital, reassured by a doctor that Duane would pull through. Feeling hopeful, they left the hospital, only to receive devastating news hours later from Allman Brothers Band roadie Joseph “Red Dog” Campbell.
“When I opened the door, I could see the look on Red Dog’s face and knew Duane had passed,” Middleton recalls. “I told him not to say anything yet. Just then, I heard Gregg’s voice from the bedroom asking, ‘What’s going on?’”
A Close Call with Addiction
What transpired next could have resulted in a double tragedy. According to devon Allman, after leaving the hospital, Gregg and Middleton sought out heroin.
“They scored some heroin and got high. My dad overdosed,” Devon explains. “Chank thought for a moment that he had lost both of them. Thankfully, they revived my dad, but for a brief time, it felt like both brothers were gone that night.”

Gregg, who passed away on May 27, 2017, shared his thoughts on Duane’s death in the documentary, noting how his perspective evolved over the years.
“For a long time, I would drink heavily and lament that he was robbed of his life,” Gregg reflects. “But as I matured, I realized he didn’t miss out; he lived fully and had a great time.”
