On february 3, 1975, Robin Trower delivered a performance at Stockholm Concert hall that would go on to be hailed as one of the most remarkable live recordings of the 1970s. The following year, this electrifying concert was released as Robin Trower Live!, showcasing the raw energy of his power trio at their peak.
A Near Miss: The Album That Almost Wasn’t
However, the creation of this legendary album was nearly thwarted. “We were incredibly fortunate that the tape was rolling that night,” trower recalls with a grin in an interview with Premier Guitar. “Performing in a proper concert hall, the acoustics were phenomenal, which pushed us to deliver our best.” He reminisces about the contrast, noting, “Most of the time, we were stuck playing in hockey arenas that had terrible sound quality. We had no idea they were recording us.”

From Unawareness to Finding
At that time, Trower was on tour promoting Bridge of Sighs, the album that solidified his status as one of rock’s emerging guitar legends, featuring hits like “Bridge of Sighs” and “Day of the Eagle.” drawing an audience to the Stockholm Concert hall was not a challenge,despite the venue’s reputation as the home of the Swedish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra rather than a rock venue.
Unbeknownst to the band, Swedish Radio had recorded their performance. It wasn’t until they received a tape of the broadcast-standard practice for radio stations at the time-that Trower and his band realized they had the foundation for a live album.

However, a meaningful issue arose: the vocal track of James “Jimmy” Dewar was unusable due to excessive bleed from the instruments, especially the drums. Instead of resorting to extensive studio fixes, as many bands would do, Trower and his band opted for a more straightforward approach. “Jimmy re-recorded his vocals in about an hour-just a live run-through,” trower explains.

Fast forward 50 years from that iconic concert and nearly as long since the album’s release in March 1976, robin Trower Live! has been reissued and remixed. The new edition restores the complete 12-song performance in its original sequence, replacing the previous seven-track LP format, and features a fresh remix by Richard whittaker.

For Trower, there was no hidden formula behind the performance. “there was no special amp or unique guitar,” he states. “Most of my gear was relatively new.I simply visited Manny’s, the iconic guitar shop in New York City, purchased a 100-watt Super Led Marshall, and tried out several strats acoustically before choosing a black-and-white model with a maple neck.”
“If there’s any secret to my tone,” he continues, “it’s that all my guitars have relatively high action and heavier strings. It’s crucial for the strings to resonate acoustically, which translates into a powerful electric sound.”
Interestingly, Trower might not have become synonymous with the Stratocaster had it not been for Jethro Tull’s Martin Barre, who encouraged him to explore fender’s legendary model. While the Strat became integral to his sound, Trower has consistently resisted comparisons to the iconic Jimi Hendrix, who defined the instrument for a generation.
