Celebrating the Legacy of Jennifer Finch: L7’s groundbreaking Bassist Passes Away at 59
Jennifer finch,the iconic bassist of L7 who played a pivotal role in defining the Los angeles punk rock scene,has sadly passed away at the age of 59. This heartbreaking news follows her recent declaration regarding her battle with a severe form of brain cancer.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, finch’s bandmates expressed their sorrow: ”It is indeed with profound sadness that we share the news of our cherished bandmate, friend, and fellow rebel, jennifer Finch, who has left us today.”
“She fought valiantly against brain cancer and was deeply loved by countless friends, fellow musicians, and fans around the globe. We will always love you, Jennifer.”
The band further honored Finch in a statement released through their publicist,stating,”We are devastated by the loss of our beloved bandmate,sister,and friend Jennifer Finch. Her fierce spirit, humor, and limitless creativity were instrumental in shaping L7 and have forever changed our lives.”
“Jennifer was a true original who lived life on her own terms. The influence she had on music, art, and everyone fortunate enough to know her is immeasurable. Our love for her transcends words, and we will carry her memory with us always. Rest in power, dear friend.”
Earlier this month, Finch had announced her withdrawal from L7’s Last Hurrah farewell tour due to her ongoing health struggles, which required extensive medical treatment and home care.
A GoFundMe campaign was initiated by friends and family to assist with her medical expenses, which had escalated due to unforeseen complications, resulting in “multiple surgeries and a series of challenging setbacks.”
As of now, the campaign has raised nearly $400,000. A portion of the funds will be allocated to an initiative aimed at preserving Finch’s legacy by creating an archive of her artistic and creative contributions.
Finch was a multifaceted creative force, excelling in music, art, photography, and bass guitar. She joined L7 in 1987, shortly after the band’s inception, and became a cornerstone of their classic lineup.
With her distinctive Ghost bass-an instrument she famously loaned to Krist Novoselic and later donated to the Punk Rock Museum-Finch provided a heavy, responsive bass foundation that defined L7’s hard-hitting sound alongside bandmates Donita Sparks, Suzi Gardner, and Dee Plakas.
“One of my greatest fears is being exposed as not that great at bass.technically, I know what I enjoy-I want the bass to be explosive and maintain a solid bottom-end while also having overtones and drive,” Finch once shared with Bass Player about her musical style.
beyond her musical contributions, Finch was a cultural icon within the industry, advocating for women and LGBTQ+ rights in a predominantly male-dominated environment. Her influence extended far beyond her time with L7; she played alongside a young Courtney Love in Sugar babydoll, founded the punk rock band The shocker, produced a tribute album for the Ramones, toured with Nirvana, and established her own label, Little Pusher Records.
The music community has come together to honour Finch, with tributes pouring in from artists like Tom Morello, Garbage, Violet Grohl, and Courtney Love.”God bless her. She was a vital part of the LA scene, a genuinely cool person, and a true artist with a kind and welcoming heart,” Morello remarked. “I held her in high regard and will miss her dearly.”
“This is incredibly heartbreaking; she was such a powerful presence,” Grohl added. “She made so many feel acknowledged. Rest in peace, legend.”
