Reflecting on his initial impressions of Hendrix, Rundgren shared in a video on Hendrix’s official YouTube channel, “At first, I was uncertain about him. Clapton, Beck, and peter Green all played Gibsons, which had a distinct sound influenced by the blues greats. I aspired to emulate them.”
He continued, “Hendrix, however, wielded a Fender Stratocaster, producing a sound that was markedly different. His style was less about precision and more about a wild, untamed energy. Initially, he leaned on blues and R&B, but he hadn’t yet fully matured as an artist.”

For Rundgren, who reminisced about nearly jamming with Hendrix in Greenwich Village, *Axis: Bold as Love* represented a significant turning point. Hendrix had not onyl discovered a unique musical identity but had also expanded his creative horizons as a songwriter.
“This album was a whole new experience,” Rundgren remarked about *Axis: Bold as Love*. “It wasn’t just about the guitar work; Jimi had evolved as a songwriter, crafting a vivid universe filled with imagery like dragonflies and castles.The songs felt like a soundtrack to an imaginative journey.”

Rundgren noted that Hendrix’s songwriting maturity was evident, as tracks like “Little Wing” became widely covered by numerous artists. “This was the first true Jimi Hendrix album for me. It remains timeless, showcasing what can be achieved with a guitar and a lyrical style that was rare among black artists of that era. His creativity was astounding, especially for someone who had risen through the ranks as an R&B guitarist.”
