MXR Launches Flanger/Doubler Pedal: A Tribute to Dimebag Darrell’s Signature sound
MXR has unveiled a new pedal that pays homage to one of Dimebag Darrell’s most cherished tone-shaping tools: the Flanger/Doubler Pedal. This innovative stompbox captures the essence of Dimebag’s legendary heavy metal sound, which was heavily influenced by his use of various Dean guitars,Randall amplifiers, and a selection of pedals.
The MXR Flanger/Doubler was a pivotal element in Dimebag’s setup, frequently enough serving as an ‘always-on’ thickening agent. The Doubler function was particularly crucial, enhancing his sound while maintaining the precision required for his intricate riffs.
Despite being somewhat of an unsung hero in Dimebag’s rig, the Flanger/Doubler can be distinctly heard in iconic tracks like Cowboys from Hell, slaughtered, and hellbound. Its presence contributed substantially to the powerful and dynamic guitar tones that fans have come to love.
Recently, Zakk Wylde, another guitar legend, has incorporated the Flanger/Doubler into his rig for the Pantera Festivity shows, further solidifying its status in the heavy metal community. “Yes, the rumors are true,” shared Wylde’s guitar tech, Stephen Murillo, on Instagram. “The MXR Flanger/Doubler Pedal launches on August 11th,and I’ve used it in Zakk Wylde’s rig. It sounds fantastic!”
Rex Brown, the bassist of Pantera, also endorsed the pedal, commenting, “That’s all you need.” This endorsement from fellow band members highlights the pedal’s authenticity and relevance in the heavy metal genre.
For metal enthusiasts, the introduction of this pedalboard-friendly version of the previously discontinued rack mount is exciting news. The Flanger/Doubler features an all-analog design utilizing bucket-brigade technology, complete with the original control set. Musicians can easily switch between flanger and doubler effects with a dedicated button, and a mix knob allows for seamless blending of wet and dry signals.
Additionally, the Invert button alters the wet signal polarity, providing a unique tonal shift that ranges from airy to a robust low-mid punch, offering players even more versatility in their sound.
The Flanger/Doubler Pedal is now available for purchase at a price of $333. For more data, visit MXR’s official website.
