From‌ Obscurity ⁢too Recognition: Cashier’s Journey‍ to Alt-Rock⁢ Stardom

Kylie Gaspard recalls the moment her social media notifications exploded with messages from friends‌ about‍ a certain Frank who had shared thier track, Beginner, from her alt-rock band, Cashier.

“They were all saying, ‘Frank Ocean!’” Gaspard chuckles, the⁢ excitement still palpable. As the lead vocalist of the Lafayette, louisiana-based group, she reflects on the surreal experience. “He listened to it halfway⁣ through,⁤ snapped a photo, and‌ shared ⁢it.⁢ I think ‍it was taken ⁤in a‌ Rolls Royce. It’s just mind-blowing and incredibly validating. He’s‌ a legend.”

“Without a doubt, ⁣he’s one‍ of the most influential artists of the last decade,” adds⁤ Jo Perillo, the band’s lead guitarist.

A moment of Validation

For Cashier,‍ having ⁣a superstar like Frank Ocean⁣ discover and promote their music was a notable endorsement‌ of their DIY ‌ethos.

“It made me feel like we could really make it on⁣ our own,” Gaspard shares. “It’s ‌definitely a boost of⁢ confidence,”⁣ Perillo‍ concurs.

Evolution of⁤ Sound

Cashier’s change into the alt-rock, shoegaze-inspired band that has caught⁢ the attention of industry heavyweights wasn’t always the case. prior to the ⁢pandemic, they were more of a textured indie ‌rock outfit, reminiscent of ⁤artists like Alex G. Then came the Big muff pedal.

“That’s when Cashier’s true sound ‍began to emerge,” ‌perillo explains.⁤ “We both use a big Muff and a ‍Rat⁣ pedal. The Rat gives us our standard tone, while I⁣ place ⁣my Big ⁤Muff after⁤ it, and Kylie uses hers before for the heavier sections.⁤ My⁣ go-to is the Fuck⁣ Overdrive from a now-defunct⁤ company ⁣called Smallsound/Bigsound.”

Another crucial element in shaping their sound was a Squier J. Mascis Jazzmaster. Borrowed from a friend, Perillo’s Jazzmaster became the band’s equivalent of iconic gear like Metallica’s EMG pickups‍ or Kurt ⁢Cobain’s small Clone.

“I’ve been borrowing it for seven ⁤years, and my⁤ friend finaly⁢ saeid,’You can keep using ‍it,’” Perillo laughs.”It’s an‌ incredible guitar that has really helped Cashier find its identity, as I ⁢didn’t have a guitar that suited a rock sound before.”

New Directions with The Weight

These ⁢elements combined have contributed to the unique sound showcased in The Weight, their debut EP‌ released ⁣under Philadelphia’s Julia’s War Recordings. This project ⁢marks a shift‍ from their⁣ earlier shoegaze-influenced tracks.

“Shoegaze⁤ has become ⁤such a broad term,” Gaspard notes.”with The Weight, we’re clearly leaning more towards alt-rock. the songs are more straightforward.”

Looking Ahead

What’s next for Cashier?

“We hope ⁢the EP and our singles can keep everyone satisfied for now,” Gaspard reveals. “We’re contractually⁤ obligated to release⁤ an LP next year, and it’s definitely in the works. I’m‌ feeling the pressure of a deadline, ⁤which will help me get it done.”
