Mike McCready’s Journey: From Addiction to the formation of a Grunge Supergroup
As Pearl Jam soared to new heights in the early ’90s, Mike mccready found himself spiraling into a dark abyss of substance abuse. During this tumultuous period, he often felt disconnected from the band, battling his demons while they achieved unprecedented success.
In an interview with Guitar World in April 1995, McCready reflected on the growing rift between him and lead vocalist Eddie Vedder.”I lacked confidence and felt isolated,” he admitted. “As the band gained fame,I retreated into my own world.”
recognizing the need for change, McCready took a pivotal step towards recovery by reaching out to Vedder. “I told Eddie, ‘I know I’ve been a mess, but I want to rebuild our friendship like it was in the beginning,’” he recalled, highlighting the importance of their bond.
Despite numerous attempts to stay sober, McCready faced setbacks. His bandmates were supportive, frequently enough expressing concern for his well-being. “They thought I might not make it,yet they never considered kicking me out of the band,which is astonishing given my behavior,” he shared.”I was frequently enough intoxicated and embarrassing myself, but their friendship never wavered.”
“They called me frequently, and it was comforting because I truly needed their support,” McCready said.
Eventually, McCready made the courageous decision to enter rehab, where he discovered the depth of his connection with his bandmates. “I had been living in a bubble, surrounded by people who were also using,” he explained.”But once I got clean, I realized how much my friends cared about me.”
While McCready had to navigate sobriety on his own, he was never truly alone. Stone Gossard and the rest of the band checked in on him regularly, reinforcing their friendship during his recovery.
“It was incredible to see how much they cared.When you’re using, you don’t recognise the love around you,” he noted. “You’re only focused on the people you’re using with, and it clouds your perception.”

The formation of Mad Season, a supergroup that included the late Layne Staley of Alice in Chains and Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees, became a significant turning point. During rehab, he met bassist John Baker Saunders, who would later join the Seattle indie-rock band The Walkabouts.

He also discovered that he was a more focused and creative musician without the influence of substances. “I used to think I needed something to spark my creativity, but that was a misconception,” he stated. “Now, I’m more engaged with the music instead of being in a haze.”
“the idea that I needed drugs to write or perform is simply false,” he concluded. “In reality, those substances hindered my creativity more than they helped.”
