NAMM 2025: The Return of a Classic
Mesa/Boogie has officially unveiled the much-anticipated reissue of the iconic ’90s Dual Rectifier, a legendary high-gain guitar amplifier that shaped the heavy music scene throughout the 1990s. This launch follows last week’s teaser, marking a meaningful moment for guitar enthusiasts and musicians alike.
Reviving a Legacy
This reissue aligns with Mesa/Boogie’s ongoing trend of resurrecting classic tube amplifiers, following the successful return of the Mark IIC+ in late 2024. The Dual Rectifier, much like its predecessor, is celebrated as one of the most influential amplifiers in electric guitar history. According to the Gibson Gazette, its tone has been extensively modeled in the digital realm, with companies like Universal Audio and IK Multimedia replicating its signature sound.
A Historical Perspective
Originally launched in 1992 after years of development, the Dual Rectifier quickly became a favorite among guitarists across various genres. Its powerful sound has been embraced by renowned bands such as Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, Tool, and Korn, solidifying its status as a staple in rock and metal music.
Modern Enhancements
The new Dual Rectifier is described as a “faithful recreation” of the original, featuring a striking Black Diamond Plate grille and Black Bronco vinyl that pays homage to its roots. This updated version includes a foot-switchable dual channel design, allowing players to switch between “scorching high-gain crunch” and “expressive cleans.” The amp offers three distinct modes: Red, Orange, and Green, each providing unique tonal characteristics.
Control and Performance
The control panel is straightforward, featuring Master, Presence, Bass, Mid, Treble, and Gain knobs, along with a Loop Active Master knob for the FX loop. Under the hood, the 100-watt head is equipped with five 12AX7 preamp tubes, four 6L6 power tubes, and two 5U4 Rectifier tubes, ensuring robust performance.
Upgrades for the Modern Player
Mesa/Boogie has also introduced several enhancements to appeal to contemporary musicians. The clean tones have reportedly been refined for improved clarity and depth. Additionally, a Variac switch allows players to toggle between tube and silicon diode rectifier modes, offering a range of tonal options. this feature enables a fierce attack in ‘Bold’ mode or a more elastic feel in the ‘Spongy’ setting, catering to different playing styles.
Channel Customization
The rear panel now includes a Channel Style Select Switch, allowing for a unique “cloning configuration assignment.” This means players can configure the amp to have two high-gain Red channels or two mid-gain Orange channels, providing greater flexibility for those who prefer specific tonal setups.
