Microphone pre-amps: 16x Rupert Neve Designs 5052
Pre-amp outputs were sent to Avid HD analog-to-digital converters connected to an Avid HDX card,recorded into pro Tools Ultimate on an Apple Mac Pro 2019 16-core.
Direct microphone sound – no EQ applied either pre or post recording from the Neve 5052 Pre-Amps EQ section.
Basic EQ settings were applied using the EQ section of the Neve 5052 mic Pre-Amps, with no post-recording EQ or processing.
Post EQ from the neve 5052 mic pre-Amps, along with post-production EQ, gating, parallel compression, and reverb added to the snare and toms. Additional processing was applied to room mics and parallel drum bus for enhanced sound.
“The microphone setup was meticulously arranged, with overheads and room mics positioned to the center of the snare drum to maintain phase coherence. The AEA R88 MK2 mics, being stereo, posed no phase issues, while the front center room mic and center overhead were aligned for a consistent stereo image. Phase correction was applied to the kick and snare mics as needed. Hi-pass filters were utilized on the hi-hat,ride,and overhead mics. The AKG C414B mics on the toms provide a flat portrayal, as do the Electrovoice PL80 mics on the snare. Every effort was made to ensure that the ‘No EQ’ sound example accurately reflects the drums’ live sound. The studio’s live room has been treated to deliver a neutral sound, with room mics capturing the true essence of the drums. Using 16 identical mic preamps ensures consistency in tone and phase. The goal was to provide an authentic representation of the drums’ sound and demonstrate potential enhancements.”
