Introducing the EVH SA-126 Standard: A Game-Changer in Affordable Guitar Innovation
NAMM 2025: One of the standout moments in the guitar gear landscape of 2024 was undoubtedly the launch of the EVH SA-126 Standard, marking Wolfgang Van halen’s inaugural signature guitar. This model has quickly become a favorite among musicians, and it’s easy to see why.
A Hybrid Marvel
The SA-126 is ingeniously crafted as a semi-hollow guitar, engineered to withstand the intense, high-gain demands that fans of the Van Halen legacy expect, all while eliminating the common issue of feedback. Wolfgang himself described it as “a hot rod with a modern engine,” emphasizing its unique position in the market.
Affordable Excellence
Initially launched in the mid-range price bracket of under $2,000, the SA-126 line has now expanded with the introduction of the Standard model, which is priced below $1,000. This strategic move makes high-quality performance accessible to a broader audience.
Craftsmanship and Design
Upon examining the headstock of the SA-126 Standard, it’s clear that this model is crafted in Indonesia, reflecting a growing trend in the industry to source affordable yet high-quality instruments from this region. The guitar features a 24.75” scale length and retains the mahogany body of its predecessor, while also incorporating a mahogany center block, diverging from the basswood used in the Special model. Additionally, the Standard showcases a maple top, similar to half of the Special variants.
Fretboard Features
While the fretboard is made of rosewood—differing from the ebony found on the Special—the Standard maintains the same specifications with 22 jumbo frets and a compound radius of 12”-16”. It also introduces new block-style inlays and includes a spoke wheel truss rod adjustment, a feature borrowed from its more expensive counterpart.
Sound and Performance
On the sonic front, the SA-126 Standard is equipped with a pair of dynamic humbuckers designed by renowned pickup expert Tim Shaw. Musicians can easily manipulate their sound using two volume and tone knobs, complemented by a three-way toggle switch for additional tonal versatility. The guitar is also outfitted with a T.O.M bridge and stop-bar tailpiece, oversized strap buttons, and keystone tuning pegs, ensuring both stability and style.
Visual Appeal
Visually, the SA-126 Standard is offered in several striking finishes: Piano Black and Satin White with black hardware, Pelham Green with chrome hardware, and Transparent Wine Red with gold hardware. Each option is designed to appeal to a variety of aesthetic preferences.
Looking Ahead
“In 2025,we will once again challenge the ‘norm’ with the introduction of the SA-126 Standard,a groundbreaking hybrid guitar that redefines versatility and performance,” stated EVH,highlighting their commitment to innovation.
Set to be available in May, the SA-126 Standard will retail for $899, making it an enticing option for guitar enthusiasts looking for quality without breaking the bank.
