Nita Strauss: From Fan to Inspiration – A Journey with Steve Vai
In recent years, Nita strauss has ascended to the pinnacle of the guitar world, earning accolades as one of the top female shredders. Yet, even with her impressive rise, she admits to feeling a sense of nervousness around her idol, Steve Vai.
Over the years,Strauss adn Vai have developed a close friendship, sharing stages and experiences. To her, Vai embodies a mentor-like figure in the realm of guitar, and his influence has become increasingly prominent in guitar publications.
“He is incredibly supportive,” Strauss shared during her appearance at Guitar Summit 2024 with Rock Antenne. “He often sends me messages, pointing out articles about me in Guitar World.”
“It’s surreal to receive such kindness from someone I admire so much.He has always been encouraging, especially as I navigate my journey as an artist following in his footsteps.”
In a previous interview with Guitar Player, Strauss revealed that her interest with the electric guitar was solidified by vai’s legendary performance in the film Crossroads. this pivotal moment drove her to immerse herself in learning and honing her craft.
“At 13, I watched Steve Vai in Crossroads. He was so captivating,” she reminisces. “I had a guitar, but I hadn’t truly connected with it yet.Watching him made me think, ‘Why didn’t anyone tell me you could play like that?’ It was mind-blowing!”
Having someone like Vai in her corner is undoubtedly a thrilling experience for Strauss, who has always sought portrayal in the male-dominated guitar scene.
Finding Role models in a Male-Dominated World
While Vai’s artistry resonated deeply with her, Strauss yearned for a female guitarist to look up to. At 38, she reflects on the scarcity of female role models during her formative years.
“it’s crucial to serve as a role model, even if it’s not on a grand scale,” she explained at Guitar Summit. “Growing up, there weren’t many female guitarists in the spotlight, making it challenging to find someone I could relate to. For me,that person was Jennifer Batten.”
Batten gained fame for her performances on three world tours with Michael Jackson in the late ’80s and ’90s, and also her contributions to two albums by Jeff Beck, who Else! and You Had It Coming.
“Seeing Jen perform on the world’s biggest stages with Michael Jackson, shredding through solos at the Super Bowl, was awe-inspiring,” Strauss recalls. “It was incredible to witness a woman excelling at that level, and I aspire to create similar moments for the next generation of girls.”
She also dismisses the label of “female guitarist,” emphasizing that there are more significant issues to address. “Honestly, it doesn’t bother me. Some people get upset about being labeled as the best female player, but I’m just grateful to be part of the conversation. I don’t consider myself the best; I’m just happy to be included.”
A Twist of fate in the Alice Cooper Camp
Recently, Strauss found herself in a unique situation within the Alice Cooper band. Due to her solo touring commitments, she had to step back from the ongoing U.S. tour, which opened the door for her predecessor, Orianthi, to rejoin. However, a sudden injury forced Orianthi to withdraw, leading Cooper to enlist former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke just days before the tour commenced.
This isn’t the first time Strauss has had to prioritize other projects; she previously took a break in 2022 to perform with pop-rock sensation Demi Lovato, a decision that Cooper fully supported.
Reflecting on the “revolving door” of guitarists, Cooper expressed his gratitude for having collaborated with so many talented musicians. Strauss is anticipated to rejoin the band for their upcoming tour, continuing her journey as a prominent figure in the rock guitar scene.
