Rudy Sarzo: A Journey Through the voices of Metal Legends
Rudy Sarzo stands out as one of the few musicians who has had the privilege of performing alongside two of the most iconic vocalists in heavy metal history: Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio. Reflecting on his experiences, Sarzo notes that only one of these legends exhibited a “higher level of musical integrity, kindness, and originality.”
From Quiet Riot to Ozzy: A Transformative Experience
In 1981, Sarzo joined ozzy’s band, thanks to a advice from his former bandmate Randy Rhoads of Quiet Riot. This chance marked a pivotal moment in the Cuban bassist’s career. However, his collaboration with Dio came much later, in 2004, after he had already toured with notable acts such as Whitesnake, Queensrÿche, and Michael Angelo Batio.
“The contrast between those two phases of my career was astonishing,” Sarzo shared during an interview with Matt Pinfield on 955KLOS. “By the time I started working with Ronnie in 2004, I had been on the road for about 23 years. I thought I had seen it all, but Dio took everything to a new level.”
Dio’s Unique Musical Essence
“Playing with Ronnie was an entirely different experience in terms of musical integrity, kindness, and originality. He always sounded like himself, and I felt honored to be part of a band with such an American original,” Sarzo expressed.
While Sarzo’s tenure with Ozzy lasted approximately 18 months, resulting in contributions to two live albums—1982’s Speak of the Devil and the 1987 release tribute—his time with Dio proved to be more enduring. He remained with Dio for the final six years of the singer’s touring career, which concluded in 2009 due to Dio’s battle with stomach cancer.
A Heartbreaking farewell
“The last performance I had with him was on November 16, 2009. The very next day, he had to go to the emergency room, where they recommended he see an oncologist,” Sarzo recalled. “We had been rehearsing for weeks, preparing for a Christmas tour in England and Scandinavia. His voice was astonishing during those sessions.”
At that time, Dio was performing with heaven and Hell, which meant the band had shifted away from Black Sabbath songs to explore deeper cuts from the Rainbow catalog. “We were revisiting songs he hadn’t performed since his Rainbow days,” Sarzo added.
Sadly, the anticipated tour never took place, as Dio passed away from cancer in 2010, leaving a void in the metal community.
Ozzy’s return and Sarzo’s Legacy
in a twist of fate, Ozzy Osbourne is preparing to come out of retirement for a final Black Sabbath concert in Birmingham, where Sarzo is also expected to perform. This monumental event will feature an all-star lineup, including Metallica, Wolfgang Van Halen, Billy Corgan, and Ozzy’s former guitarist, Jake E. Lee.
Sarzo has often reflected on his time with Randy rhoads, praising the guitarist’s unique rhythm playing and tonal characteristics as key elements that set him apart from his contemporaries.
