Teh G3 Dream That Almost Was: Joe Satriani’s Near-Collaboration with Jeff Beck
Since its launch in 1996, Joe Satriani’s G3 tour has brought together some of the most talented guitarists in the industry. From the likes of Steve Vai and Robert fripp to John petrucci and Eric Johnson, Satriani has successfully collaborated with nearly every guitarist on his dream list throughout the tour’s history.
Though, one iconic guitarist managed to slip through the cracks, despite initial indications that a collaboration was imminent.
Jeff Beck: The Elusive G3 Collaborator
Jeff Beck stands out as one of the most notable guitarists who has yet to grace the G3 stage, not for lack of effort on Satriani’s part. The legendary guitarist revealed that a G3 tour featuring Beck was on the verge of happening, only for unforeseen circumstances to derail the plans.
“The one that was so close to really happening was me with jeff Beck and Billy Gibbons,” Satriani shared during his appearance on the UCR Podcast. “We were just a week away from finalizing everything. It was incredibly close.”
Sadly, Beck withdrew at the last minute, leaving Satriani puzzled. “He claimed it would be better if we brought prince on board rather,” Satriani recounted. “I took that as a humorous excuse, like he just didn’t want to do it and threw out the most absurd suggestion.”
A dream Line-Up That Could Have Been
In 2018, Satriani expressed his desire to assemble a dream G3 lineup featuring his musical heroes: Eddie Van Halen, Jeff Beck, Brian May, and Billy Gibbons. This lineup aligns with the tour he referenced in his podcast discussion, and it’s easy to imagine the magic that could have unfolded.
Despite having met the late Beck only twice, Satriani never felt comfortable enough to inquire about the real reason behind his withdrawal. “There was no way for me to approach him and ask,‘Why didn’t it happen?’” he reflected. “I’ve always thoght, ‘Let’s get Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck together!’ You know, let’s bring out all the guitar legends.”
Generational Gaps and Collaborative Challenges
Satriani speculated that the generational gap between him and Beck might have contributed to the latter’s hesitance. “I could see them thinking, ‘Who is this kid? We don’t know him. He plays instrumental guitar; who cares?’ So, I never really believed it would come to fruition, but I would still ask.”
Interestingly, other musicians have not felt the same generational divide. “Occasionally, someone would agree or just show up and say, ‘I want to play,’ like Brian May, Neal Schon, or Robert Fripp,” Satriani noted. “We’ve been quite blessed in that regard.”
Fripp’s Unique Approach to G3
Robert Fripp joined the G3 tour in 2005 and has since been one of the most intriguing personalities Satriani has collaborated with. “When he came on board, he insisted on not being listed and wanted to perform before the show started,” Satriani explained in a 2022 interview with Guitar Player. “He said, ‘Don’t turn on the lights. I’ll play behind the amps as people find their seats. Just don’t mention my name.’ That was his preference.”
“We did a few tours together, just me, Steve, and Robert playing blues or something. It was hilarious, and he was fearless about it. He remained true to himself until the very end.”
Looking Ahead: Satriani’s Future Collaborations
Later this year, Satriani will reunite with Steve Vai, Peter Thorn, and the ever-busy Marco mendoza as part of the SatchVai band. Additionally, he has publicly defended Kurt Cobain’s guitar skills, expressing his hope that the next generation of guitarists will surpass him.
