Renowned pedal steel guitar artist, composer, and improviser Susan Alcorn, who significantly expanded the instrument’s reach beyond its customary genres, passed away in Baltimore, Maryland, on January 31 at the age of 71 from natural causes.
Born on April 4, 1953, into a musically inclined family, Alcorn was immersed in the sounds of classical composers like Beethoven and Brahms, as well as jazz legends such as Ella Fitzgerald and Glenn miller. One of her most cherished childhood memories was attending a symphony concert during her elementary school years. “That was the highlight of the year for me.Experiencing all those instruments live in the concert hall was magical,” she shared with Baker Artist.
At the tender age of eight or nine, she began her musical journey with the viola, later picking up the cornet and trumpet. The soundtrack of her formative years included iconic artists like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Roy Orbison. A pivotal moment came when she moved to Chicago and met the legendary Muddy Waters,which profoundly influenced her musical path.
“Witnessing his slide guitar performance, filled with emotion and raw power, changed my life,” she recalled.“I started with bottle-neck guitar, then transitioned to hawaiian guitar, dobro, and ultimately the pedal steel guitar. Muddy Waters was my gateway into this world.”
Although Alcorn faced challenges in learning the pedal steel guitar due to a lack of local instructors, she became largely self-taught. After relocating to Houston, Texas, she took a few lessons from the esteemed jazz pedal steel player Maurice Anderson, who became her mentor.
In Houston,Alcorn immersed herself in the local music scene,gaining experience in country and western swing while collaborating with various musicians,which greatly contributed to her artistic progress.
A Transformative Musical Experience
A meaningful turning point in Alcorn’s career occurred in 1990 when she collaborated with composer and philosopher Pauline Oliveros,who introduced her to the concept of Deep Listening—an innovative approach to music that encourages engagement free from preconceived notions.
Another defining moment was her participation in the 12 Minutes Max event at a Houston art space. “I was given the freedom to create anything provided that it lasted no longer than 12 minutes,” Alcorn noted on her official website. “I had never performed solo before and was incredibly nervous. But as I sat at my steel guitar and connected with the audience, I felt a profound intimacy that I had never experienced before as a musician.”

Alcorn’s solo endeavors culminated in her debut album, Uma (2000), marking the beginning of a prolific career that included over a dozen albums.
