As was to be expected,Slash’s surprise appearance was a highlight of the night. He joined the ensemble towards the end, delivering an exhilarating performance that included an original track and two classic rock anthems, showcasing his signature bluesy guitar solos.
“Doesn’t it sound just like Slash?” Morello joked as the legendary guitarist plugged into a Marshall amp. They kicked off wiht Interstate 80, a song they co-wrote during the pandemic, exchanging fiery solos that left the audience in awe.
The setlist continued with MC5’s iconic Kick Out the Jams, a track previously covered by Rage Against the Machine, and concluded with the high-energy AC/DC classic, Dirty Deeds (Done Dirt Cheap).
Slash, donning a beanie and glasses, played as if he were in the comfort of his own home, delivering a spontaneous and relaxed performance that resonated with the crowd.
This final number featured a collaborative effort from a diverse group of musicians, including Måneskin’s Thomas Raggi, SOAD’s shavo Odadjian, and The Struts’ Luke Spiller, who had earlier joined Morello for a rendition of Måneskin’s Gossip.
RZA from Wu-Tang Clan took the stage next, energizing the audience with Ain’t Nuthin’ to Fuck Wit, while Roman Morello showcased his skills on his father’s classic hit, Killing in the Name, along with Soldier in the Army of Love, a song they co-wrote.
The devastating LA wildfires, which ignited on January 7, have wreaked havoc across the city, displacing many, including musicians like Iron Maiden’s Adrian Smith and Primus’ Larry LaLonde, who lost their homes and equipment.
In response, the music community has rallied together, organizing a series of benefit concerts, initiatives, and raffles to support those impacted. Companies like Fender, Gibson, and Guitar Center, along with Spiritbox’s Mike Stringer, have played a crucial role in raising funds.
Another notable benefit concert featured an unexpected reunion of Nirvana, fronted by four incredibly talented women, including Joan Jett and Grammy-winning guitarist St. Vincent. This initiative was inspired by Dave Grohl, who aimed to highlight female talent during their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance.
“If we can fill the performance with these incredible women singing Nirvana songs, than we’ll have achieved our own revolution,” Grohl shared with Rolling Stone regarding the Hall of Fame event.
