Billy Corgan Explores the ‘Metal Yardbirds’: A Deep Dive with Tom Morello
In a recent episode of his interview series, The Magnificent Others, Billy Corgan welcomed Tom Morello for a captivating discussion. During their chat, Corgan shared an intriguing theory that connects him, the Rage Against the Machine guitarist, and another iconic guitarist, suggesting they form a modern-day ‘Yardbirds of metal.’
shared Roots and Musical Journeys
Both Corgan and Morello hail from neighboring regions, and as Corgan reflects, they “grew up in the same environment,” experiencing similar musical influences during their formative years. The Smashing Pumpkins frontman also mentioned adam Jones of Tool, who famously collaborated with Morello in their youth, as part of this trio that shared both social and sonic experiences.
Despite their common interests and backgrounds, the paths each musician took diverged significantly once their careers began. Morello embraced a politically charged rock style with Rage Against the Machine, Jones ventured into progressive territory with tool, while Corgan cultivated the option rock sound of the Smashing Pumpkins. This divergence has left Corgan pondering the reasons behind their distinct musical directions.
A Engaging Connection
“I have this theory that no one seems to acknowledge,so I’m sharing it with you,” Corgan told Morello.“It’s fascinating that Adam [Jones] from Tool and I were living just 20 miles apart, all starting rock bands that were heavily riff-oriented, yet we took our music in three wholly diffrent directions.”
This phenomenon of closely connected musicians branching out into unique styles is not unprecedented. A similar scenario unfolded in England with Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page, who all grew up in Surrey and eventually joined the same band. Corgan draws parallels between these two groups, noting, “Some might take issue with my comparison, but it’s akin to the dynamic of Beck, Clapton, and Page growing up in the same area. We’ve all influenced what came next.”
What’s in the Water?
“What was it in the water we were all drinking?” Corgan mused, highlighting the shared experiences that shaped their musical journeys. The connection between these three heavyweights is evident, as they all emerged from similar backgrounds yet forged distinct paths in the music industry.
Echoes of the Past
Indeed, the experiences of Clapton, Beck, and Page resonate with Corgan’s observations. All three guitar legends were linked through their time in the Yardbirds before embarking on their unique musical journeys. Page led the charge into hard rock with Led Zeppelin, Clapton explored psychedelic rock and blues with Cream and his solo endeavors, while Beck became known for his innovative blues rock and fusion styles.
Corgan sees a similar trajectory with Morello and Jones, noting that their shared roots in metal are evident.“The one thing that all three have in common is metal,” morello remarked, recalling their youthful days driving to Judas Priest and Iron Maiden concerts.
The Future of Collaboration?
While Clapton, Beck, and Page onyl shared the stage during a legendary tour, fans are left wondering what a collaboration between Morello, Corgan, and Jones might sound like. With the recent announcement of a supergroup featuring Tool, Rage Against the Machine, and the Smashing Pumpkins set to perform at Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath’s final show, the possibility of this dream collaboration may soon become a reality.
