“Being invited to join KISS as their guitarist was a pinnacle moment in my career,” reflects Bruce Kulick, the former six-string maestro of the legendary band, in an interview with Guitar Player. “As one of the four members on stage, the pressure was palpable. While touring globally with KISS’s non-makeup era, I understood the importance of delivering a stellar performance every single night.”
As Ace Frehley’s most notable successor, Bruce Kulick consistently rose to the occasion, impressing audiences show after show. Over his 13-year tenure as KISS’s lead guitarist,Kulick — who recently launched a line of vintage-inspired guitars reminiscent of his time with the band — contributed to six studio albums and two live recordings. More considerably, he played hundreds of live shows during extensive tours.
We invited him to reminisce about his most unforgettable and challenging performances with the iconic band.

The Highlights of My Journey
Growing up in New York City, I had the privilege of witnessing numerous legendary acts at Madison Square Garden, which always felt like a personal triumph to share with family and friends.
“However, when I think of my most remarkable performance with KISS, my mind travels to a distant land: Japan. In 1988, during the Crazy Nights tour, KISS made its first appearance in japan without the iconic Kabuki makeup. It was my first trip outside the United States, and I was thrilled. My interest with Japanese culture, notably their innovative electronics, had always been a part of my life.I adored Sony Walkmans, Panasonic boom boxes, and especially ESP Guitars, which originated from Japan!”
“Tokyo’s renowned Nippon Budokan was a dream venue for me. Originally built for the first martial arts competition during the 1964 Olympics, it hosted the Beatles in 1966 and is famously known for cheap Trick’s legendary live album, At Budokan, released in the U.S. in 1978. The name Budokan was forever etched in my mind as a place I longed to perform.”
“When we took the stage there on April 22, 1988, the Japanese audience, known for their reserved enthusiasm, erupted with love for KISS! The fact that this concert was professionally filmed by Japan’s top broadcasting company, NHK, allowed me to relive that magical night. My performance was filled with precision and passion.”
“During my solo, I had to traverse the stage, never pausing my riffs on my vibrant red ESP Horizon guitar. I played with flair and deep emotion. It felt like I was at my peak, and between the venue and the audience, it stands out as a career highlight — perhaps my best show ever.”
The Low Points
“Conversely, my most challenging gig occurred in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The region’s complex religious and political tensions were foreign to this brooklyn native. Arriving in Belfast and witnessing armed police on the streets was unsettling.”
“We performed at King’s Hall,a venue that had previously hosted legends like The Beatles,Thin Lizzy,and U2. This concert marked the final show of our extensive Crazy Nights tour on october 3,1988.”
“For reasons I couldn’t quite grasp at the time — perhaps due to the unrest in belfast — the eager fans at King’s Hall expressed their excitement in a rather unusual way: they were spitting at us! Their aim was notable, even reaching my guitar neck while I was trying to play!”
“It was a truly unpleasant experience. I ended up with spit in my hair and all over my clothes! Gene[[[[Simmons]and Paul[[[[Stanley]were also caught in the crossfire, while Eric Carr, safely behind his drum kit, managed to avoid it.”
“Later, we learned that this was a form of affection from irish audiences — a rather unique way to show love for a band. No, thank you! I was relieved when that show concluded and thrilled to return to the comfort of America.”

“Arriving in Belfast, I was struck by the presence of armed police, which created an uneasy atmosphere,” Kulick recalls.“During the show, the audience expressed their excitement in a rather unusual way — by spitting at us!”
Despite the discomfort, Kulick managed to deliver a solid performance, although he was relieved when the show concluded.
2. The Pressure of Live Performances
As a member of KISS,Kulick felt the weight of expectations during live performances. The pressure to deliver a flawless show was always present.
