John 5: Celebrating Ace Frehley’s Unique Melodic Brilliance
While Ace Frehley may not fit the mold of a customary shredder, for John 5, the legendary guitarist from Kiss shines in a distinctly different light. When it comes to crafting unforgettable guitar solos, the newest member of Mötley Crüe believes Frehley is in a league of his own.
Frehley’s infamous audition for Kiss, which took place in a dilapidated New York loft, nearly ended in chaos when Gene Simmons almost threw a punch. However, once Frehley plugged in and began to play, all tensions dissipated, showcasing the immediate impact of his music.
for John 5, whose impressive career includes collaborations with icons like Rob Zombie and David Lee roth, the ability to create a solo that resonates with listeners is far more notable than mere technical prowess. He credits Frehley with mastering this art, which ultimately inspired him to pursue guitar.
“When you’re young, you find inspiration in various figures, whether they’re athletes or musicians. For me, it was Kiss, and that’s what propelled me into my current path,” he shared in an interview with Ultimate Guitar.
“Inspiration is vital; it can leave a lasting impression and transform your life,” he added, emphasizing the importance of finding motivation in one’s journey.
John 5 recognizes that his own style diverges significantly from Frehley’s melody-driven approach, which only deepens his admiration for the guitarist. “I’ve always been drawn to pushing boundaries,” he explained. “I aim for the highest peaks, whether it’s the fastest race car or the most intricate guitar work. That’s why I’m passionate about shredding.”
“Yet, I have immense respect for Ace and his melodic solos. No one can match his skill in that area. I’m grateful to have been influenced by such remarkable musicians,” he concluded.
The Melodic Legacy of Guitar Solos
This sentiment echoes the philosophy of Wolfgang Van Halen, who learned from his father, the legendary Eddie Van Halen, that a memorable solo doesn’t always require a flurry of notes. “A solo should be melodically memorable,” Wolfgang stated. “A single note can leave a more profound impact than a barrage of 2000 notes. It’s not about speed.”
Although John 5 has chosen to embrace a more aggressive shredding style, he still regards Frehley as a pivotal influence in shaping his sound.
Reflecting on his admiration for Frehley in a 2023 interview with Guitar World, John 5 remarked, “He was like my superhero. The essence of Ace was incredibly special to me. As a kid, I viewed him as this larger-than-life character… I could hardly believe he was real.”
On the other hand, Frehley has recently voiced his frustrations with former bandmates, alleging that Kiss misrepresented the circumstances of his departure from the band, insisting that his narrative is the only one that matters.
Despite his loyal fanbase, Frehley has candidly admitted to feeling like “a sloppy guitarist” as he ages. Nevertheless, he is committed to refining his skills as he gears up for a tour in support of his latest solo album.
