The Search for a New Guitarist
In the early 1990s, Def Leppard, the iconic British glam rock band, was on the hunt for a new guitarist to fill the void left by Steve Clarke.Clarke’s battle with alcoholism had led him to take a step back from the band as they worked on their fifth studio album, Adrenalize.

A Call from L.A.
“I flew out to Los Angeles for a few days,” Smith recounted in an interview with Blabbermouth. “Phil [Collen, the band’s other guitarist] reached out and asked if I’d be interested in coming over.”

Rehearsals and Reflections
“I spent a couple of days jamming with Phil,” Smith continued. “We went through various tracks, and it felt great. They’re a fantastic group of guys, but it just didn’t pan out.”
“Additionally, my album with Psycho Motel was about to be released. But who knows what could have happened? It was definitely worth exploring. They’ve done quite well without me, though!”
insights from Phil Collen
In a recent 2023 interview, Collen shared that Campbell, who had previously played alongside Ronnie James dio, “fit in seamlessly” with the band. He also confirmed that Sykes, who sadly passed away in 2024, had auditioned as well.
“With Adrian,” Collen noted, “he played in the context of what we were rehearsing. We weren’t playing Iron Maiden or Dio songs. Anyone who joins us has to adapt to our style.”
