Rising Star: The Early Days of Tommy Bolin
Walden first crossed paths with Bolin in 1975, a time when Bolin was rapidly ascending the ranks of rock stardom. After joining the James Gang,where he took over from Domenic Troiano-who had succeeded Joe Walsh-Bolin’s reputation soared following his electrifying performance on Spectrum,the groundbreaking 1973 solo album by Billy Cobham.

Defining Jazz Fusion: The Impact of Spectrum
Considered a cornerstone of jazz fusion, Spectrum showcased a blend of rock intensity and jazz intricacy, setting a standard for the genre. Bolin’s dynamic, Echoplex-infused sound on tracks like “Stratus” and “Quadrant 4″ marked his emergence as a formidable talent.
“I first heard about him through a band called Zephyr, which made waves while I was in high school in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was just raw, rebellious guitar.I was all in.”

Collaboration and Connection
The success of Spectrum led Bolin to sign with Nemperor Records, paving the way for his 1975 solo debut, Teaser. During this exciting time,Walden and Bolin finally connected,although Walden had long admired Bolin’s work.
“We met through Nat Weiss, one of the co-founders of Nemperor, and Tommy invited me to play on his album,” Walden recalls. “I was thrilled to join him.” The duo recorded “Marching Power,” an instrumental highlight featuring keyboardist Jan Hammer and saxophonist David Sanborn.
“After we finished the track, Tommy suggested, ‘I’m going on tour. Want to join me?’ Absolutely! I was eager for more exposure in rock, which I hadn’t experienced much while playing jazz-rock fusion.”
A New Chapter with Deep Purple
However, Bolin had other plans. His newfound fame from Spectrum caught the attention of Deep Purple, who were in search of a replacement for Ritchie Blackmore.Bolin joined the band and contributed to the 1975 album Come Taste the Band. The subsequent tour delayed his solo plans for Teaser.
sadly,Bolin’s time with Deep Purple was short-lived. By the end of the tour, he was grappling with a heroin addiction. Following the band’s disbandment in 1976, he returned to his solo career, forming a new band that included Walden, bassist Reggie McBride, keyboardist Mark stein, and saxophonist Norma jean Bell.

The Final Days
“We were on fire!” Walden recalls. “But after we returned to New York for a show at the Bottom Line, Tommy had too much to drink and had to lean against a pole. It was disheartening to see him in that state.”
At this point, Bolin was grappling with severe substance abuse issues, which ultimately led to his untimely death on December 4, 1976.
The Bottom Line concert marked a turning point for Walden.
“That was my last performance with him. I felt awful leaving the band because we had such a strong bond,” Walden reflects. “I cherished Tommy. We shared a Native American heritage, which created a unique connection between us.”
“However, I couldn’t remain in an environment dominated by alcohol and drugs, which ultimately claimed his life.”
