It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of rick Buckler,the iconic drummer of the influential Mod band,The Jam.
The Jam emerged as one of the most meaningful musical acts of the 1970s, releasing six studio albums and achieving an notable 18 consecutive Top 40 singles, including four chart-toppers. Their remarkable journey spanned a decade, culminating in their split in 1982.
Originating from London’s vibrant ’pub rock’ scene, which also launched the careers of bands like The Stranglers and Dr.Feelgood, The Jam carved out their unique sound. Buckler’s dynamic drumming served as the driving force behind Paul Weller’s poignant critiques of societal inequalities. His energetic and precise drumming style complemented Bruce Foxton’s melodic bass lines and Weller’s sharp,minimalist guitar work. The staccato drum rolls in tracks like A Town called Malice exemplified Buckler’s approach, prioritizing solid, melody-enhancing rhythms over unneeded flourishes.
After The Jam’s abrupt dissolution, Paul Weller ventured into new territory with The Style Council, while Buckler and Foxton found themselves unexpectedly navigating their careers without the band’s support.
Rick buckler briefly formed a new band, Time UK, and explored record production.Eventually, he stepped away from the music scene to pursue a career in furniture design and restoration. However, in 2005, he returned to music with a new project, The Gift. His collaboration with bruce Foxton in the band From The Jam lasted four years, during which they toured and performed The Jam’s classic hits. Buckler eventually left the group, expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of new material and Foxton’s decision to reconnect with Weller.
Even after stepping back from a full-time music career, Buckler continued to play drums occasionally and authored several books detailing his experiences with The Jam. He was set to embark on a spoken Word tour,which was unfortunately canceled due to health issues.
Rick Buckler passed away on february 17, 2025, at his home, surrounded by loved ones, following a brief illness.The cause of death has yet to be disclosed. He was 69 years old.
