Experience the Magic: Win Tickets to Charo’s Concert in Orinda, California!
“I’ve traveled extensively, yet I’ve never set foot in Orinda,” exclaims the vibrant Latin music icon charo, her distinctive Spanish accent adding charm to her words. “What a lovely name! If I ever have a daughter, I might name her Orinda. I hear it’s close to San Francisco, where the audience is as lively as I am!”
From the moment you engage with Charo, her exuberant personality radiates, even through a shaky phone line. It’s no wonder that María del Rosario Mercedes Pilar Martínez Molina Baeza, who hails from Murcia, Spain, became a beloved figure on American television in the late ’60s, gracing shows like the Tonight Show Starring johnny Carson, Fantasy Island, and The Love Boat.
Readers of GP have twice honored Charo as the Best Classical Flamenco Guitarist in the World. This accolade is particularly extraordinary considering she was mentored by the legendary classical guitarist Andrés Segovia, widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time.

As her career blossomed, Charo’s guitar skills often took a backseat to her comedic persona and her iconic “cuchi-cuchi” catchphrase, despite her already being a skilled guitarist. She adeptly navigated the entertainment industry while continuously honing her craft.
“Gradually, I learned to blend the serious with the playful,” she reflects.
Charo remains as captivating as ever, effortlessly entertaining with her delightful anecdotes and sharp comedic timing. Though, her guitar playing has transitioned from a mere side note to the centerpiece of her performances.
“I received an amazing review from my concert at Pepperdine University a couple of months ago,” she shares. ”The feedback was heartwarming, with people expressing tears of joy. They traveled from afar just to experience beautiful music, and I wholly understand that feeling.”
“When music resonates so deeply that it elevates your soul, that’s what makes it all worthwhile. Provided that I have the energy to step onto the stage, I will continue to perform.”
Unlike many artists who still experience stage fright, Charo appears more at ease on stage then off. “Offstage, I’m like a cucaracha with a multitude of issues,” she laughs. “I don’t feel nervous when performing because I adore people and have trained like an Olympian. With rigorous practice, you become prepared, and that eliminates nerves.”
“I often start by chatting for a bit, then I say,’Now,let me reveal a side of me that I’ve kept hidden for too long.’ Then I showcase my guitar skills to the best of my ability.”
“I aim for a high-energy performance, maintaining that intensity for 30 to 45 minutes, transitioning from salsa to rhumba to flamenco.”
While she enjoys a variety of styles, she eagerly mentions a favourite piece that audiences can anticipate in Orinda: ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’ by Joaquín Rodrigo, which she describes as “a divine gift to every musician.”
Having led a life filled with remarkable experiences, Charo possesses a unique outlook. “I feel blessed and privileged to perform for everyone in Orinda,” she expresses. “When you step on stage and see a crowd eager for quality entertainment, it’s truly invaluable.”
