Established in the vibrant city of Chicago during the 1920s by H.H. Slingerland, this iconic brand has left an indelible mark on the drumming world. The 1930s saw the introduction of the legendary Radio King drums, which quickly became a favorite among percussionists, thanks in part to the endorsement of the famous drummer Gene Krupa. Over the years, Slingerland has consistently pushed the boundaries of drum design, inspiring countless musicians along the way.Although production ceased in 2008, vintage Slingerland kits remain highly sought after by producers, studios, and collectors alike.
“Slingerland is a cornerstone of American drumming culture, and I’m excited to usher in this new chapter for the brand,” shared Don Lombardi, founder of DW. “With a legacy that resonates deeply with me, I was overjoyed when my son Chris gifted me the possibility to acquire the Slingerland brand for my birthday in 2019.Our skilled artisans are dedicated to meticulously preserving the beloved sound and intricate details that drummers cherish.”
To commemorate this notable revival, Slingerland has unveiled a new Radio King Limited Edition Snare, a tribute to the brand’s rich history and exceptional craftsmanship. This snare is a meticulous reproduction of the classic model that drummers adored in the late 1930s and early 1940s, built to the same specifications that made it a global favorite.
The snare features shells crafted from steam-bent solid Maple, complemented by authentic Nickel-plated hardware, Nickel-over-Brass Stick Chopper hoops, and a genuine calfskin batter head. Only 50 units of each size and finish will be produced, available in two sizes—7 x 14” and 5 x 14”—and four stunning finishes: Black Diamond Pearl, White Marine Pearl, Blue and Silver Lacquer, and Black and Gold Lacquer. Each snare is individually numbered and signed by Don Lombardi, and comes with a custom Radio King snare case.
The Radio King snare is merely the beginning of an exciting new lineup from Slingerland. Plans are underway to design and produce a complete range of drums tailored for the next generation of drummers.
