We live in a world where almost every guitar player will tell you ⁤how they are ⁤‘old-school’ in some ⁤way, shape or ⁤form. but very few live up to that term as sincerely as Wisconsin-born, nashville-based blues dynamo Jared⁤ James Nichols.

By his own admission,he’s a man of simple ⁤pleasures – ‍give him a guitar with only one pickup,an overdrive pedal and an amp ⁣that responds in a similar way to his⁤ signature blackstar JJN 50,and he’s ready to hit the road for months on end.

Your latest single, Ghost, co-written⁢ with ‌Tyler Bryant, has just dropped. Can you share more about it?

My goal is to continuously‌ release singles leading up to the ⁣album launch in ‌may. After my previous self-titled album in 2023, I ⁣received feedback that while my live performances were electrifying, my recordings didn’t quite capture that energy. It felt⁤ like a compliment wrapped in criticism, prompting me to ‍create an album that featured just three musicians jamming together, ⁢recorded⁢ live at Blackbird Studio in nashville, which is exactly what⁤ we accomplished with the⁤ self-titled ‍project.

I’m thrilled with the outcome, but I realized I was trying ⁤to‍ encapsulate all my influences and inspirations into one record, almost ‍like chasing a fleeting moment of brilliance.

Watch On

What sets your upcoming album apart from⁣ your previous work?

This time around, I’ve tapped into ⁣Nashville’s vibrant songwriting community, which is filled with remarkable talent. I’ve ‍collaborated with some incredibly prosperous songwriters, including my good freind tyler bryant. We can craft a song together in mere minutes whenever we hang out.

The collaborative spirit in Nashville is palpable, and for this album, I wanted to focus on the songwriting aspect. I’ve shared some tracks with industry veterans like Zakk Wylde and Joe Bonamassa, and their reactions have been overwhelmingly⁤ positive. It’s almost surprising to see a ‌guitarist releasing songs that resonate well!

What lessons have you learned from a decade of touring?

Understanding dynamics is crucial. Early in my career, I believed that playing⁣ aggressively for an entire set would leave the audience exhilarated. Though, I’ve learned that a well-curated setlist that varies in intensity can create a more engaging experience,‌ much like a compelling film that takes the viewer on an emotional journey.

Leslie West was one of my greatest inspirations. We were ‌building a friendship just before he passed, and I had ‍the chance to jam with him.

One of the most disheartening experiences on ⁤stage is when you⁤ feel a disconnect with the audience. When people start ⁢leaving for drinks, ⁤it’s a stark reminder that you need to captivate them. Your goal‍ is to keep‍ everyone engaged, even if they’re unfamiliar with‌ your music, so they become curious about your songs.

If you could have a lesson with any musician, past or ‌present, who ⁢would it be?

Leslie West has always been a⁣ hero of mine. We were forming a bond just as he passed away, and I had the privilege of jamming with ‍him. his records continue to inspire me, leaving me in awe of his unique licks and⁤ tones. He was⁣ a contemporary of Hendrix, which adds to his legendary status.

Jeff Beck⁢ is also high on my list.Recently, I had the prospect ⁤to sit down with Tommy Emmanuel, and being just a couple of feet away from him while he played was nothing short of a ⁢spiritual experience. It ‌was mesmerizing – the kind of magic that makes you wonder what it was like to witness Hendrix live. It‌ must have felt otherworldly.
