Sammy Boller’s Journey: A Tribute to His Mother Through Music
In 2025, Sammy Boller experienced a remarkable chapter in his career when he stepped in as the lead guitarist for the Goo Goo Dolls during their amphitheater tour, following an injury to Brad Fernquist. This unexpected prospect allowed Boller to perform beloved hits like Iris, making it a truly unforgettable summer.
As the leaves began to change, Boller shifted his focus to his solo work, inviting listeners into the enchanting soundscapes of his latest EP, Midnight Garden.
Exploring the Soundscapes of Midnight Garden
With tracks like Spellbound, Boller captivates audiences with intricate, swirling arpeggios that dance across the stereo field. Simultaneously occurring, The Mapmaker combines playful pizzicato elements with R&B-inspired digital beats, showcasing his versatility. The standout track, Rama Bhakti, features a delicate tapping technique that evolves into a vibrant, fast-paced rhythm, culminating in a dazzling display of technical prowess.
“I’ve been exploring melodic tapping for quite some time,” Boller shares. “It’s reminiscent of playing the piano, where you can harmonize with one hand while playing the melody with the other.”
A New era of Creativity
Midnight Garden marks Boller’s first notable solo project since 2020’s kingdom of the Sun. collaborating with producer Nick Sampson across several studios in Michigan, Boller primarily utilized his trusted Les Paul guitar, but also experimented with a Friedman Noho 24 and an eight-string Ibanez borrowed from Tim Henson of Polyphia, adding depth to his rhythmic compositions.
“I enjoy the contrast in my instrumental pieces, shifting from pristine clarity to intense heaviness,” he explains, highlighting the dynamic range present throughout the EP.
A Heartfelt Tribute
Another poignant moment on Midnight Garden is the bonus track Mother Light, which begins with emotive piano chords and culminates in a passionate guitar solo that resonates with Boller’s deep emotions. “I composed that piece for my mom. Initially, I never intended to release it, but after her passing last year, I felt it was a fitting tribute. She was an unbelievable musician in her own right,” he reflects, recalling her time performing in a band called Atlantis with his father, and also her talent for comedy.
Spiritual Influences and Personal Growth
The EP also delves into Boller’s spiritual journey, with tracks like Rama Bhakti drawing inspiration from Hindu deities such as Hanuman. His captivation with these figures blossomed as he began crafting instrumental music, intertwining their teachings with his personal and artistic evolution.
“The quest for spirituality is fundamentally about self-discovery,” he states. “The more you delve inward and seek to understand yourself, the more your music evolves alongside that journey.”
