Reflecting on his iconic track, Al Di Meola remarked, “the composition was quite straightforward compared to what I would create later. The essence of the piece lies in that riff, which drew inspiration from the Kinks,” during an interview with Guitar player in 2020, discussing his 1977 masterpiece, Race with Devil on Spanish Highway.
While its roots may seem simple,Race with Devil on Spanish Highway stands as a remarkable showcase of guitar prowess, although Di Meola has often resisted the label of “proto-shred” associated with it.
In April 2015, Di meola graced the Canyon Club in agoura Hills, California, delivering a performance filled with his signature guitar gymnastics. The evening was made even more special with a surprise encore featuring the legendary Steve Vai.
During this encore, the two guitarists unleashed a fiery rendition of Race with Devil on Spanish Highway, a highlight from Di Meola’s acclaimed album, Elegant Gypsy.

Despite the song’s complexity, Di meola shared that the studio recording was captured in a single live take, featuring the talents of Anthony Jackson on bass, Barry Miles on keyboards, and Lenny White on drums.
“We practiced the piece a few times before heading to Electric lady Studios in New York City,” he recounted in his 2020 interview. “The musicianship of my bandmates was so extraordinary that they could interpret a chart and elevate the song without much guidance from me.”
“I played my ’71 Les Paul Custom through a Marshall 50-watt half stack, opting not to use any effects to maintain the punch of the sound,” he explained. “I cranked the bass and midrange to 10, while turning the treble down to zero. I recall Larry DiMarzio visiting the studio and commenting on my settings, noting that they were similar to Leslie West’s.”
“Everything was recorded live, including my solos. I was positioned in the center of the room, surrounded by the other musicians. There was some bleed from their instruments, but that’s just part of the collaborative experiance,” he concluded.
