“Duane was the first electric guitarist I ever encountered, as I was more of an acoustic folk musician,” Hanna recalled in a conversation with Otis Gibbs. ”At that time, he played a telecaster fitted with a Stratocaster neck, and I believe he had a Fuzz Face inside the guitar. Even when he played unplugged, it was mesmerizing.His talent was undeniable.”
Finding His Sound
Despite his immense skill, Hanna noted that the band did not fully showcase Allman’s guitar prowess, which may explain why he was captivated by the freedom exhibited by hendrix’s power trio.
Eventually, Allman sought independence from their shared living arrangement and moved into his own apartment with Dirt Band drummer Jimmy Fadden, where Hanna frequently visited.
“We were hanging out in Duane’s apartment when Are you Experienced was released. We spent days immersed in the music, enjoying some marijuana,” Hanna reminisced. “After listening to the album multiple times, I realized that Duane was playing those incredible sounds back to us on his little, worn-out amp with a strat. It was astonishing.”
A Moment of Inspiration
This experience highlighted Allman’s exceptional abilities. Just as Eric Clapton was inspired by Buddy Guy’s trio in London to leave the Bluesbreakers and form Cream, Are You Experienced motivated Allman to pursue his own trio.
“He said, ‘Guess what? I’m going to leave and form a trio!’ He was really nailing it, which was quite bold considering we were listening to Hendrix’s record and he was saying, ‘I can do that'[[[[laughs].His admiration for Hendrix was clear.”

Though, unlike Clapton, Allman’s aspirations for a trio never fully materialized. In 2007, Dickey Betts revealed to Guitar World that Allman had formed a trio with future Allman Brothers Band members Berry Oakley on bass and Jai Johanny “Jaimoe” Johanson on drums. They even secured a record deal with Atlantic Records, with early recordings made at Muscle Shoals.
“Their group was intended to be a power trio, similar to the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream,” Betts explained. “But Duane had to take on vocal duties, and jaimoe’s drumming style didn’t quite fit that mold.”
“Berry brought back some demos of their work,and while it was promising,it just didn’t measure up to the likes of Hendrix and others.”
