During a recent performance at the July 5 Back to the Beginning show, which celebrated the legacy of Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne, Nuno’s guitar prowess caught the attention of fellow guitarist Jake E. Lee. “Jake told me, ‘You’re one of the most versatile musicians – exactly what a band needs,’” Bettencourt recalls. ”That was my aspiration all along. I never aimed to mimic anyone; I wanted to carve my own path, surrounded by musicians who could not only shred but also create compelling songs and melodies.”
From his early days in Boston, nuno has consistently delivered memorable tracks with Extreme, including hits like Mutha (Don’t Wanna Go to School Today), Get the Funk Out, and the iconic More Than Words.

“Did that really happen?” he laughs, recalling the unforgettable day of the Back to the Beginning concert.”It felt surreal, like I had to rely on the photos and videos to confirm my presence there. Being invited to such a significant event was a pivotal moment in my life and career.”
Though, Nuno admits that when he first saw the lineup for the concert featuring Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne, he felt a mix of surprise and introspection. “I wasn’t bitter, but I was taken aback,” he shares. “Seeing such a stellar roster of artists made me wonder why I wasn’t included.”
Reflections on Inclusion
“I noticed the extraordinary list of musicians who were invited, and it made me think about my own journey,” he explains. “I had turned down an offer from Ozzy in 1995, and I wondered if that decision had impacted my current standing in the rock community.”
“But then I thought, ‘Get over it! They have a lot of artists to consider.’ Extreme has always felt like the underdog in rock music,” he adds, highlighting the band’s unique genre-blending style that often left them on the fringes.
Embracing the Prospect
Despite his initial reservations, Nuno received a call to perform at the concert. “Tom Morello was coordinating the lineup, and it was like herding cats,” he recalls. “He initially asked me to join one supergroup for a couple of songs, but soon it turned into a request for more.”
“Three days later, he asked if I could do even more songs because some artists had to drop out,” Nuno laughs. “I had to juggle my commitments with Extreme, but I was resolute to make it work.”
Balancing Commitments
“My manager told me I had to choose between the two gigs,” he recounts. ”I refused to back down. I wanted to perform with Def Leppard and also be part of the Ozzy and Sabbath show. I told them to arrange backup flights; I was committed to doing both.”
Ultimately, Nuno performed 12 songs at the concert. “Once I started rehearsing, I understood why some artists pulled out. It wasn’t just about playing the notes; it was about capturing the essence of Randy Rhoads’ style,which is a different language altogether.”
“Standing on that stage, surrounded by legendary musicians, I thought, ‘What am I doing here?’” Nuno reflects. “I felt a responsibility not just to represent myself but to honor the legacy of Randy, Jake, and Tony Iommi.”
He describes feeling like two versions of himself: one,the accomplished musician,and the other,the young boy dreaming of being on stage with his idols. “I could almost see that kid from Hudson, Massachusetts, wondering if I truly belonged there,” he says.
