“I started my musical journey on the piano when I was around six years old,” Kiki shared during a recent masterclass with Guitar Center, moderated by Guitar World‘s Paul Riario.
“My father dabbled in guitar, but my focus was solely on the piano. One day, my mom visited Costco and noticed they had guitars on sale. She picked up a Yamaha Eterna, thinking it would be a great gift for my dad. I was about 12 at the time,” she recalled.
“My dad had played a bit, but eventually, the guitar ended up in the closet. I remember thinking, ‘What’s this mysterious object? I need to unlock its secrets!’” Wong expressed her curiosity, leading her to request guitar lessons from her father, who could only offer limited guidance.
“He said, ‘I can teach you three chords, but after that, you’re on your own,’ as that was about all he knew. I asked if I could take formal lessons, but they told me I was already committed to piano. So, I thought, ‘I guess I’ll have to figure this out myself,’” she explained.
Discovering Metallica: A Turning Point
Wong credits her “biggest inspiration” to discovering Metallica, which dramatically reshaped her musical preferences and solidified her playing style.
“I transitioned from basic rock to metal when my brother introduced me to Metallica. He handed me Master of Puppets, and I was blown away. I thought, ‘I have to learn this!’ Although it didn’t go as smoothly as I hoped,” she admitted.
“Eventually, I mastered it, and I became fully obsessed with metal. For a while, it made me somewhat of a one-dimensional player, but my passion for heavy tones and metal music has remained unwavering. I’ll always cherish Master of Puppets,” she shared.
