Warren Haynes’ New Signature Les Paul: A Dive into P-90s
NAMM 2025: In a thrilling announcement last November, Warren Haynes, renowned guitarist of Gov’t Mule and former member of the Allman Brothers Band, disclosed that he was collaborating with Gibson to create two exciting new signature guitar models.
The Allure of P-90 Pickups
One of the standout features of these upcoming models is their P-90 pickups. Haynes shared his enthusiasm in an interview with American Musical Supply, stating, “While I’ve primarily used humbuckers throughout my career, every time I pick up a guitar equipped with P-90s, I feel a surge of creativity.” He emphasized that discussions about this collaboration with Gibson have been ongoing for quite some time.
Introducing the Cherry-Finished Les Paul
The first of these models, a stunning Cherry-finished Les Paul, has officially made its debut. Although specific details are still limited, we do know that this guitar features a mahogany body topped with a plain maple cap, finished in a vibrant 60s Cherry hue reminiscent of his cherished 1961 ES-335.
Additionally, the guitar sports a mahogany neck with a robust 50s vintage profile, echoing the design of Haynes’ favorite Les Pauls.
Innovative Features
Beyond the P-90 pickups, this Les Paul model is equipped with a unique toggleable on-board clean boost, enhancing its versatility for players seeking a range of tonal options.
Anticipation for the Triple P-90 Firebird
Along with the Les Paul, Haynes also hinted at the development of a rare triple P-90 Firebird. “I’m about to dive deep into the world of P-90s,” he remarked, highlighting his excitement for this new venture.
Reflecting on a previous experience, Haynes recounted, “Gibson once crafted a Custom Shop Firebird for me with three P-90s, and it was my first time playing a three-pickup Firebird. Initially, the middle pickup took some adjustment, but once I got accustomed to it, the tonal possibilities were incredible. I loved exploring the diverse sounds it offered.”
Seeking New Inspiration
Haynes expressed his desire for fresh inspiration, stating, “While I’ve established a solid sound with my Les Pauls over the years, it’s essential to challenge myself occasionally. This exploration ignites a new spark and can lead to exciting musical directions.”
