It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Frank Beard, the legendary drummer of ZZ Top, who succumbed to health complications at the age of 77.
While not the founding drummer of ZZ Top, Beard joined the band shortly after their debut single, Salt Lick, in 1969, stepping in for Dan Mitchell. Before his time with ZZ Top, he played in a band that emulated the British group The Zombies without their permission.
Born in Frankston, Texas, in June 1949, BeardS musical journey began in his teenage years when he teamed up with bassist Dusty Hill in a band called The Warlocks.After a series of musical endeavors, Hill invited Beard to join ZZ Top, and together with guitarist Billy gibbons, they formed the iconic trio that woudl leave an indelible mark on rock music.
ZZ Top skyrocketed to fame in the late 1970s, coinciding with Beard’s battle against severe drug addiction. In 1977, the band took a notable break to allow Beard to seek rehabilitation. What was intended to be a brief hiatus extended to over two years, yet the band never once considered replacing him. Beard was the driving force behind ZZ Top, and his absence would have fundamentally altered the band’s identity.
After signing with Warner Brothers in 1979, ZZ Top entered a golden era, producing hits like Eliminator in 1983 and Afterburner in 1985. These albums featured polished production and catchy singles that introduced the band to a broader pop-rock audience.
Frank Beard’s drumming was crucial to ZZ Top’s success.While some may have underestimated the simplicity of his style, it was his signature ‘Texas Shuffle’ that formed the backbone of the band’s sound.Drummers around the globe recognize that Beard’s seemingly straightforward backbeat requires an innate sense of timing that cannot be taught. The irony lies in the fact that mastering his simple yet effective rhythm is often more challenging than complex drumming techniques. Former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum encapsulated Beard’s skill perfectly: “It might sound easy, but it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever tried to learn. He had that Texas shuffle in his blood.”
The trio’s unpretentious blues-boogie style became a staple on American rock radio and later on MTV, thanks to their memorable music videos for hits like Got Me Under Pressure and Legs. The album Eliminator achieved Diamond status, selling over ten million copies in the U.S.and remaining on the Billboard 200 chart for an astounding 187 weeks, equivalent to three and a half years.
Throughout his life, Beard faced numerous health challenges, including an emergency appendectomy in 2022 that forced him to miss several ZZ Top performances. In March 2025, he again had to step away from touring due to unspecified health issues.Even though it was initially thought he would return, fate had other plans. Frank Beard passed away peacefully at his Texas ranch, surrounded by family and under hospice care.
