NAMM 2026: Ibanez re-enters the pedal arena with the Layer Delayer, a groundbreaking delay pedal that promises to revolutionize the way we think about delay effects.
This innovative stompbox features a control panel reminiscent of synthesizers, which Ibanez describes as a “transformative pedal that expands the horizons of delay effects.” To demonstrate its capabilities, they enlisted the talents of fusion guitarist Jack Gardiner, showcasing the pedal’s remarkable and surreal delay effects.
Breaking away from conventional tape echo designs, the Layer Delayer generates 16th note and triplet delay signals, complemented by autonomous volume controls and dynamic lights that visually represent the delay patterns in real-time.
Additionally, it includes quarter note delays, allowing it to function as a conventional delay pedal when needed.
The primary knobs control Mix, Filter (with Resonance and Cut Off), Time (which can be set in milliseconds or synced to a BPM), Feedback, and Tone, which toggles between tape echo, analog, and digital delay modes. Users can blend two of these styles simultaneously for even more sonic possibilities.
Other features include Tail Decay,a tap tempo function,and customizable pan speed for stereo setups,offering eight different modes. The footswitches facilitate engaging the pedal, switching presets, and tapping in tempo.
In terms of connectivity, the Layer Delayer provides stereo inputs and outputs, a wet signal effects loop, MIDI compatibility for most parameters, and an expression pedal input for real-time control.A Level mini-switch is also included to adjust headroom and prevent distortion.
Powered by a standard 9V adapter, the pedal also features a USB-C port for future firmware updates. It comes pre-loaded with 20 factory presets and offers 50 customizable slots across five banks.
Visually, the Layer Delayer boasts a retro 1980s arcade aesthetic, making it a perfect fit for any nostalgic setup, while its sound design pays homage to that iconic era.
While Ibanez is renowned for its remarkable lineup of metal guitars, it’s essential to remember its significant contributions to the world of effects pedals. The TS808 Tube Screamer, for instance, remains one of the most celebrated overdrive pedals in history.
However, new pedal launches from Ibanez are relatively rare, making the Layer Delayer a highly anticipated release that aims to set a new standard in delay pedals.
