John Rzeznik Credits Taylor Swift for Breathing New Life into “Iris”
While some tracks may capture a fleeting moment in time, others resonate across generations. The Goo Goo Dolls’ iconic 1998 hit “Iris” is a prime example of the latter, and lead vocalist John Rzeznik attributes part of its enduring popularity to Taylor Swift’s influence in introducing the song to a fresh audience.
The Cinematic Roots of “Iris”
Originally crafted for the soundtrack of the film City of Angels, featuring Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan, “Iris” quickly transcended its movie origins to become a cornerstone of modern rock. nearly 30 years later,Rzeznik observes that a mix of notable covers and viral moments on social media have played a meaningful role in keeping the song relevant.
“The song has been embraced by younger listeners thanks to a few legendary artists covering it and the power of social media,” he shared in an interview with Q1043 New York.

A Memorable Collaboration
Rzeznik expressed gratitude towards Taylor Swift for the chance to perform “Iris” with her at Madison square Garden years ago. “I credit someone like Taylor Swift for allowing me to sing that song with her at Madison Square Garden many years ago,” he remarked.
During Swift’s 2011 concert at the famed venue, Rzeznik made a surprise appearance, performing “Iris” in front of a sea of enthusiastic teenage fans.
“The audience was incredibly welcoming,” he recalled. “I was surprised because I thought, ‘I don’t know how they’ll react.’ At that time, Taylor swift’s fans were predominantly teenagers.”
Reviving Nostalgia
Recently, “Iris” has experienced a resurgence thanks to a viral trend initiated by Drew Barrymore, with celebrities like Dwayne Johnson, Anne Hathaway, and Sharon Stone reminiscing about the 1990s.
“I’m thankful to all of them for it,” Rzeznik expressed. “Every night I feel lucky to perform that song. The most rewarding part is when I turn the microphone towards the audience and let them sing along; I take out my earplugs and just listen.”
“I’m really grateful every night that I get to play that song. The most gratifying part of it is when I take the microphone and just turn it into the audience and let them go.”

Streaming Success and Musical Legacy
as of 2026, “Iris” has joined Spotify’s exclusive Billions Club, boasting nearly 3.5 billion streams. This track has solidified its status as the defining hit of the Goo Goo Dolls’ career, although Rzeznik has shared a lingering regret regarding its production.
Writen from the viewpoint of an angel yearning to experience humanity, Rzeznik felt that the song required a guitar solo to complete its emotional journey. However, he struggled to create one that met his standards, leading producer Rob cavallo to enlist session guitarist Tim Pierce.

Pierce, who initially came in to record a mandolin part, arrived with an array of electric guitars and amplifiers, which led to him being invited to contribute the now-iconic solo. His soaring slide guitar became one of the defining elements of “Iris,” despite Rzeznik’s initial wish to have played it himself.
Any disappointment was fleeting, as Pierce later noted that “Iris” remains the highlight of his career, marking the beginning of a collaboration that has lasted nearly three decades.
Musical Complexity
Beyond its unforgettable solo and poignant lyrics, “Iris” showcases Rzeznik’s innovative acoustic guitar work. While the song has become a favorite among musicians from local pubs to major arenas, many covers fail to replicate one of its unique characteristics: it was composed using an unconventional alternate tuning that few guitarists attempt to recreate.
