Kevin Jonas:‌ A Journey Through Music, Doves, and DADGAD Tuning

As⁣ a key member of the iconic ⁤pop band the Jonas Brothers, Kevin Jonas has been captivating audiences for two decades. However,his musical odyssey began long before‌ the band’s rise ​to fame,as he diligently developed his craft from ⁤an early age.

early Musical Influences

“I picked up the guitar on my own at a young age,” Kevin ⁣recalls.”When‍ I was around 13 or 14, I was home sick from school and stumbled upon a ⁤red imitation electric guitar and a ‘teach yourself guitar’ book tucked away in our piano bench. I thought, ‘Why not give it a shot?’ ⁣since I had​ already been experimenting with the bass.”

“That book opened up a whole⁤ new ‌world⁣ for me. I‍ practiced relentlessly for a week, pushing through the pain until my fingers were practically ⁢raw.After that, I transitioned to playing ⁣acoustic guitar extensively,” he adds.

First Guitar and Songwriting Beginnings

Kevin’s father gifted ⁢him ⁤his first real guitar, a Takamine equipped with a tuner. “That guitar was my everything; I learned to⁤ play countless songs on it. We even wrote our debut track as the Jonas Brothers,Please Be mine,on that very instrument. it also introduced me​ to artists like John Mayer, whose album Room for Squares deeply​ resonated‍ with me as a budding songwriter,” he shares.

Diverse​ Musical Tastes

Kevin’s musical influences extend beyond the pop genre.‍ “I was heavily into punk ‌rock and the emo scene during my⁤ teenage years,” he reveals. “The first cassette I bought was from MxPx, and I was also a fan of Slick​ Shoes​ and Element 101. These bands really expanded my musical​ horizons.”

“I aspired to play like them, especially their fast ⁢drop D riffs and harmony power chords. You can definitely hear those influences in our early work,” he notes.

Recent Musical Endeavors

In the latter half of 2025, ‌Kevin, along with his brothers Nick and Joe,​ has been on tour promoting their seventh studio album, Greetings from Your ⁤Hometown. this album showcases a‍ collaboration with a talented array ​of producers and songwriters,drawing inspiration from their New Jersey roots and the timeless sounds of the Bee Gees.

While ⁤Kevin ⁤has​ primarily contributed as a backing vocalist,the 2025 tour marked a important moment ⁢as he took the lead on the new track Changing. “Although I didn’t write⁢ it, I feel a unique connection to this song,” he explains.

“I collaborated with the talented Jason Evigan and his team. They are phenomenal, and Changing holds a special place in my heart,” he adds.

Future Projects and Personal Growth

When asked about his future songwriting aspirations,Kevin admits,”I’m still figuring out my direction. I⁣ want to explore some self-reliant music. After two decades of writing and recording, I’ve often felt that something‍ was missing. But when ​I heard Changing, it struck a chord with me like never before.”

The Magic of DADGAD Tuning

Kevin expresses his fondness⁢ for various guitar tunings, especially DADGAD. “It’s one of our‌ favorites; we still use it today. You can hear its influence in When You Look Me in the Eyes. It’s ‌an expansive tuning ‌that opens ‌up so many possibilities. Our song little Bird is also in that tuning, albeit a half step down,” he⁤ explains.

This versatility proves beneficial during live performances. “We have a segment‍ in our show where Joe reads signs from the audience, and we take requests on the ⁤spot. Thanks to DADGAD, we can adapt and play almost anything,” he​ shares.

Guitar Collection and Personal Touches

While Kevin is often seen with ⁣a Les Paul,he also has a soft spot for Gibson acoustics,particularly ⁣the square-shouldered models. “The Gibson Dove in Flight ⁤is my go-to acoustic‍ guitar. I’ve always felt a connection to ‍it; I even have dove tattoos on my ⁣arms. I designed my ⁤own⁢ version, and Gibson incorporated those designs into the pickguards for me, which is incredibly special,”‌ he says.

Along with‌ his Les Pauls, Kevin treasures his custom Baranik guitar.”It’s ⁢one of a kind. When I approached Mike Baranik about purchasing ​one, he‌ mentioned he ⁣didn’t have any available⁢ but could build one for me. I asked if⁢ he could ⁤complete it in time for my upcoming tour, and thankfully, he made it happen!”

even⁢ tho he⁢ doesn’t consider himself a gear enthusiast, Kevin enjoys‌ collecting guitars and has them scattered throughout his home. “There’s ⁣practically a guitar in every room,”⁤ he laughs.”At our wedding, we even used two custom acoustic Gibsons as our guest book,‌ with ‘Kevin’ and ‘Danielle’ inscribed along ⁤the fretboards. They⁣ hold a special ​place in ⁣our home to this day.”
