Paul McCartney Reflects on John Lennon’s Enduring Influence in His Songwriting
As Paul McCartney prepares to unveil his first solo album in over five years, titled The Boys of dungeon Lane, excitement is building not only for the music but also for the upcoming Beatles biopic, wich has recently announced its main cast. among them is Paul Mescal, who portrays McCartney. Inspiration from the Past
During their discussion, McCartney revealed that he often engages with students at his former school in Liverpool, where they frequently ask him about his songwriting techniques. “I don’t have a specific method,” he admits,reflecting on the challenges of teaching creativity. “It’s not very motivating when you can’t provide a clear answer.”
He reminisced about the early days with John Lennon, recalling how they were frequently enough questioned about their songwriting dynamics. “Peopel would ask us, ‘Who composes the music, and who writes the lyrics?’ Honestly, I can’t pinpoint it.For me, every song or story must draw from memory. With the Beatles, we always aimed to create something unique,” he explained.
Channeling Lennon’s Spirit
Even as he embarks on new musical ventures, Lennon’s influence remains a guiding force for McCartney. His upcoming album delves into his formative years, reflecting on the experiences that not only shaped his life but also laid the groundwork for the Beatles’ legacy.
“I remember meeting John Lennon, who was grappling with his own struggles,” McCartney shared, recalling their early collaboration that began with the release of their first single, Love Me do, in 1962. “He faced many challenges-his father left, and his mother tragically passed away. He built a protective facade,which made him incredibly witty and sharp.That dynamic influenced our songwriting relationship.”
“On this record, I often find myself thinking of him as if we’re still collaborating.I’ll write something and wonder, ‘Is this any good?’” McCartney elaborated.

Mescal, intrigued, asked, “So you’re talking to him?”
“in a way,” McCartney replied. ”It’s more like a mental dialog. Sometimes I can convince myself it’s good; other times, I have to admit, ‘No, that’s not right.’ His essence is still within me, and I cherish that connection.”
