In late 1979, ozzy Osbourne struck gold when he recruited Randy Rhoads as his lead guitarist. Rhoads, a guitar prodigy, brought a revolutionary flair to Osbourne’s early solo work with his masterful techniques, including two-handed tapping, complex scale sequences, and dramatic whammy-bar effects. These elements were essential for the heavy metal sound that defined the early 1980s.
However, Rhoads’ relentless dedication to practice posed a challenge for Osbourne, who had just lost his former bandmate from Black sabbath a year prior on July 22. The guitarist’s commitment to honing his craft frequently enough extended into late-night sessions while on tour, which occasionally tested Ozzy’s patience.
A Custom Solution for a Unique Problem
As 1982 began-the final year of rhoads’ life-he was gifted a custom-built pedalboard designed specifically for practice.Crafted by Jon Graves and Domenic Turlace of Zeus Audio Systems in Alhambra,California,this pedalboard was tailored to meet Rhoads’ specifications. It was unveiled to him on New Year’s Eve 1981, just two months into the tour for Ozzy’s second solo album, Diary of a Madman.
Fans of Rhoads got a rare glimpse of this pedalboard in a photograph taken by Neil Zlozower, featured in the november 1982 tribute issue of Guitar Player.The image showcased Rhoads practicing on a couch surrounded by his iconic guitars: a 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom, a Jackson Concorde, and a Karl Sandoval Custom Polka Dot Flying V. Nestled on the floor was the compact pedalboard, partially obscured but intriguing nonetheless.

Just two months after the photo’s publication, Graves and Turlace elaborated on the pedalboard’s features in the January 1983 issue of Guitar Player, responding to a reader’s inquiry.

Despite its compact size, the pedalboard was equipped with a Boss Dr. Rhythm drum machine, three MXR pedals-a 6-Band graphic equalizer, a Commande Time Delay, and a Micro Chorus-and a Zeus 8401 Mini Amp. The mini amp, which was red and roughly the size of a brick, featured controls for preamp, volume, and tone, along with outputs for both preamp and external speakers. Additionally, a second amp with a 4.5-inch speaker was included for the drum machine.
Keeping Ozzy Happy
To address Ozzy’s frustration with Rhoads’ late-night jam sessions, the pedalboard incorporated a special feature known as the “Ozzy Jacks.” Turlace explained, “These jacks allow for separate signals from the guitar amp and rhythm machine for a headphone mix, effectively silencing the main speaker.” This thoughtful addition was designed to keep the peace during their tours.
Graves also mentioned that Ozzy had requested a remote switch to turn off the pedalboard from the next hotel room, as Rhoads often played into the early hours. Although this feature was never implemented, it highlighted the humorous dynamic between the two musicians.

The entire pedalboard was ingeniously housed in an ABS plastic case repurposed from a Casio keyboard-arguably the most creative use of such a keyboard ever. The lid featured a battery pack and an AC adapter, with a design that ensured the battery would deactivate when the lid was closed.
As a finishing touch, the pedalboard was adorned with a gold-plated plaque that read, “Custom made by Zeus audio Systems for Randy Rhoads,” alongside his distinctive Rolls-Royce-style logo featuring two R’s.
In their response to inquiries about replicating the pedalboard, the creators made it clear that they had no intention of producing another one.”Anyone wishing to duplicate the pedalboard,” they stated, “will have to build one themselves.”
Tragically, Rhoads would not have the opportunity to fully utilize this innovative device. He lost his life in a plane crash on March 19, 1982, during a tour stop in Leesburg, Florida.
