The Guitar wizardry of Richard Lloyd: A Journey Through Rock History
Richard Lloyd, a pivotal figure in the music scene, found his inspiration in The Beatles during his formative years as a guitarist. “the guitar was their enchanting tool,” he reflects. “they had a way of captivating the youth.That allure has always stayed with me.”
Alongside Tom Verlaine, Lloyd conjured his own musical magic with the band Television. Tracks such as see No Evil, Marquee Moon, and Friction emerged as anthems that blended punk energy with art-rock sophistication.
The Glamour of Struggle
“Tom was undeniably a genius-a true poet. I may not possess his lyrical flair, but in the realm of our artistry, my guitar work reached another dimension, even though he could sing and play beautifully. That was fulfilling for me.”
Following Verlaine’s passing in 2023, Lloyd reflects on their estrangement. “I’m at peace with how things unfolded,” he states. “My aim was to leave a mark on rock history, and I believe I achieved that.”
Choosing the Guitar: A Serendipitous Encounter
“The guitar chose me,” Lloyd asserts. Initially,he played drums,experiencing music through a unique lens due to his synesthesia. “One day, while drumming, the colors faded from my instrument, and a voice urged me to switch to a melodic instrument.”
His first encounter with the guitar occurred during a sleepover at his cousins’ house in 1958. “They passed around a guitar, and I instantly fell in love. I snuck into the bathroom to play three chords until they kicked me out!”
Electricity and Inspiration
“The guitar became my driving force,” he recalls. “I was eager to explore electric sounds. Acoustic guitars never resonated with me.” Lloyd’s fascination with electricity began in childhood when he experienced a shocking encounter with a plug. ”I learned early on that electricity and music were intertwined.”
His journey led him to meet Velvert Turner, a young musician who claimed to be close to Jimi Hendrix. “He was an unassuming kid, and everyone doubted him until he made a call to Hendrix,” Lloyd recounts. “When I spoke to Jimi, I recognized his unmistakable voice.”
Learning from Legends
Turner introduced Lloyd to Hendrix’s teachings. “jimi considered Velvert his little brother and was mentoring him on electric guitar techniques,” Lloyd explains. “Velvert would share those lessons with me, and I absorbed them thanks to my photographic memory.”
Through Turner, Lloyd also crossed paths with Led Zeppelin. “I wasn’t starstruck; I was there to learn,” he says. “I even got to warm up with Jimmy Page’s guitar tech before a show.”
Forming Television: A New Era
Before Television, Lloyd had never been in a band.”I wanted to find something I could truly invest in,” he shares. after meeting Tom Verlaine at Max’s Kansas City, he was captivated by Verlaine’s electric guitar performance. “I told the manager, ‘Forget finding a band for me; let’s team us up!’”
With the support of their manager, Terry Ork, they began to rehearse and develop their sound. “We would pass the guitar back and forth, experimenting until we found our groove,” Lloyd recalls.
Crafting Iconic Songs
Tracks like See No Evil and Marquee Moon were born from their live performances. “Initially, our sound was chaotic, especially with Richard Hell on bass,” Lloyd admits. “but everything changed when Fred Smith joined us.”
“I had the lead parts for many songs, but Marquee Moon evolved later. With See no Evil, Tom experimented with octaves, and I contributed the rest. Unfortunately, I never received credit for my songwriting contributions, which was disheartening.”
Creative Tensions and Personal Struggles
“Tom believed that only melody and lyrics deserved credit, dismissing the arrangement,” Lloyd explains. “This led to conflicts over songs like Guiding Light, where I insisted on receiving credit for my contributions.”
“The tension between us made it arduous to continue working together,” he admits. “Tom was driven by financial gain, which ultimately led to our creative differences.”
Reflecting on tom Verlaine
Despite their estrangement, Lloyd fondly remembers Verlaine’s humor and charm.”He had a knack for making me laugh, but when it came to decision-making, things could get tense,” he reflects. ”Even David Bowie had to deal with Tom’s quirks in the studio.”
“We lost touch after I left the band, but I cherish the memories of our time together,” Lloyd says. “He had a unique personality that was both captivating and challenging.”
Looking Ahead: The Richard Lloyd Group
As he prepares for an upcoming tour in the Northeast and Midwest with The Richard Lloyd Group, he embraces his role as the last active member of television. “I feel a responsibility to the fans,” he states.”I’ll be performing a mix of television classics, my own compositions, and some covers to ensure everyone enjoys the show.”
