The renowned Martin guitar used by kurt Cobain during Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance has been generously donated to the Royal collage of Music (RCM) in London,marking a significant moment in rock music history.
This extraordinary instrument, which holds the title of the most expensive guitar ever sold, was purchased by Peter Freedman, the founder of RØDE Microphones, for an astounding $6,010,000 in 2020. Its fame is largely attributed to its role in Nirvana’s unforgettable acoustic set.
Freedman dedicated this donation to his late father,Henry,who passed away in 1987,well before the legendary performance was recorded at Sony Music Studios in Hell’s Kitchen,Manhattan,in 1993.
The guitar joins an extraordinary collection at the RCM,which also features the oldest known guitar,crafted in Lisbon,Portugal,in 1581-412 years prior to Nirvana’s iconic performance.

An international touring exhibition showcasing the Martin guitar is set for 2026, following the success of the RCM Museum’s previous exhibit, Kurt Cobain: Unplugged, which attracted over 15,000 visitors, with the D-18E being the main attraction.
