“What did you think of hip-hop when you first encountered it?” Perry recalls. “My son, who was around 11 or 12, woudl blast it in his room. I loved the groove. It was simple yet powerful music, focused on rhythm and storytelling, reflecting the lives of those creating it.”

When asked about the collaboration with Run-D.M.C., Perry shares, “rick Rubin saw potential in this fusion. He had to persuade the guys, as they were somewhat hesitant. But Aerosmith was always open to experimentation. Our music spans hard rock, heavy metal, blues, and ballads.We thought, ‘Why not give it a shot?’”
During the recording process, Perry recalls, “We were in north Carolina when we received plane tickets to Queens. I brought my guitar,and there was Rick,an engineer,and the guys from Run-D.M.C. One of them was late because his rental car had been towed, which caused a bit of chaos. But Rick kept reminding everyone, ‘You’ve got Aerosmith here. Focus on the music; we’ll sort out the car later.’”
Creating the Beat
Once everyone settled, they laid down the drum beat, which served as the foundation for the song. Perry explains, “Rick suggested, ‘Since you’re using the drums for the rap, let’s take it all the way. Let’s see where this goes.’”
Interestingly, during the session, Perry played bass on the track. “There were three young guys in the studio, and when Rick mentioned needing a bass line, one of them said, ‘I can grab my bass from my apartment.’”
“Who were those three kids?” Perry laughs, “The Beastie Boys! He returned in 15 minutes with a bass, and I ended up playing it.”
A New Era for Aerosmith
The success of this collaboration marked the beginning of Aerosmith’s resurgence. Perry reflects, “It was undoubtedly a significant boost for us. We’re proud to have blended two distinct musical styles. The video was groundbreaking, featuring Black rappers on MTV when the only other prominent Black artist was Michael Jackson.
